Replace (yes, I know I need to and I get attached to them) your helmet every 3 years Does it matter that some people (not me) will ride 300 miles in 3 years and others (us) will ride 3600 miles in 3 years? |

Sure does. Keeping to Courts analogy on condoms. Replace the one in your wallet every three years, If you've already worn it a lot, you may wan to do it sooner...

Why is there an issue with a poly carbonate shell on a helmet?

Modular helmets tend to have the modular ripped off during impact causing injuries to the wearer.
Buelltoberfest last year saw a severe crash with a VStrom rider hitting a guardrail ripping the front of his helmet off and putting him in the hospital with sever head injuries.
Modular helmets are not SNELL approved. |

Modular helmets are not submitted to Snell for testing. Snell is a voluntary certification. Make sure that if you wear a modular helmet it latches on BOTH sides with STEEL latches.
I've crash tested a Schuberth (and BMW System helmet) in my time and neither one snapped the jawpiece. I know of others who've crashed hard in the Nolan helmets and they hold up as well.
As for polycarbonate shells, there is no reason to avoid them. Just DON'T store them in a garage or shed with heavy chemical fumes as the polycarbonate (just like the EPS liner) will be weakened by them.
In impact tests, helmets with polycarbonate shells actually passed LESS force to the skull than helmets with fibreglass composite shells. The testers theorized that the polycarbonate not only spreads the force of the impact over a broader area (just like the fibreglass composite) but also helps to absorb some of the impact itself. What little I know is...that a great many $200.00 helmets will crash as well as the $600.00 or $700.00 ones. I think you are paying for ventilation, noise reduction, graphics, (glitter green for me please),and of course...name. My next will be a Shoie X-11 and it will probably be a Christmas present for me from me. how many days 'till ? |

So modular helmet companies refuse to have their helmets tested by SNELL?
Every company wants to have the SNELL rating. SNELL refuses to grant the SNELL rating to helmets which fail to meet their standard.
The manufacturers can volunteer all they want, but not all who submit receive the rating. |

Snell isn't all it's cracked up to be. Get a helmet that legitimately passes the American DOT standard or better yet the European ECE standard and you'll be better off. You'll even save a few bucks. |

I agree Jamie.
The Scorpion EXO-400 is also ECE 22-05 safety rated.
I believe it also beat my Arai Profile in the new Star ratings as well.
Again, my assertion is that more expensive doesn't necessarily translate into more protection.

SNELL hasn't been everything, but they are learning and helmet ratings will get better!
I do like my EXO-400, and already mentioned some of the things I don't like - the easily twisted strap is #1, the vent controls #2...
#3 I forgot to mention - despite my short hair it gives me the worse helmet head EVER!
It looks like I have corn rows or Klingon style ridges in my skull and it won't go away!
Is this just me?
When I ride to work this becomes my #1 complaint! |

Mine did - now I have a scraped up 3/4 (and fortunately no brain issues, other than the pre-existing craziness).
This is a good thread. The testing is evolving, as science allows better understanding of crash physics. And..(unfortunately) more crashes in the database to study from. Very few legitimate manufacturers are making 'bad' helmets anymore, which is great news for us riders! |

Mr Shoei saved my head last year, so I bought another one, no fancy graphics, just plain silver, got it for 1/2 price in the summer sale.
Shop around, there's good kit out there at reasonable prices if you're not fussy about colour schemes. |
