OSX upgrades cost cash too.

Bull, I don't run any antivirus or anti spyware on any of my Vista machines. Actually that’s a lie, I installed Ad aware last week, the results came up clean, and then I uninstalled it.

Built this rig almost 3 years ago, it’s still top of the line. Only upgrades have been more memory and more video cards, but you need a lot of juice to run the latest games at 2560x1600.

I have a macbook, but I just got my girl a Dell from Wal-Mart for half the price ($700) and I gotta say it's a really nice little computer.

They just started selling a 13" notebook this month, it's dk blue, make sure you have a look at it if you're just looking for a surfing, pic, music computer.

Solid state drive, that's cool. But only 4 gigs? That ain't going very far.

Cool toy though... I could definitely make use of a device like that. A very slick thin client.

I'm glad to hear it, but does not change the fact that the windows platform for whatever reasons is the target of choice of all above mentioned maladies for a long time running now. I did not pull this out of the "Windows Bashers Handbook". I work in a office where I run the only Mac on a network of 30 PC's. My down time in 5 years on said Mac(s) for crashes of any reason, 2.
Downtime for Windows PC's in office, at least 1 machine a day. Oh and they have IT guys as support while my Mac has uh...me! And as you can see from my grammar, I am far from a genius! (oh and I run Windows in Fusion and when it has problems it only takes out the VM and not my whole box.

I was keeping this to off the shelf boxes, but you got me there. Souping up PC's is a hell of a lot easier and cheaper than Macs. Apple made that choice 15 years ago when they decided not to pursue the Gaming market. Sigh.....

Apples don't have viruses they have software release Tuesdays.

If you get off the OSX, Quicktime, Application treadmill it will get painful.

I had 42 Final Cut Pro edit systems to support and while each upgrade was only $100 to $500 that was per machine. Ouch!

They are all good.

Just bought the wife a new HP Pavillion at Best Buy for $579 to replace the clunky 5+ year old Dell. AMD processor, 3 gig RAM, 250 gig hard drive, build in wireless, webcam, 15.4", DVD burner, memory card reader, twin Altec Lansing speakers and mini remote control. Very nice.

I have been happy with my Dell XPS. One of the options is a hard drive with a free fall sensor, something useful on a computer that is "portable".

I tried going with Mac a few years back, and had terrible luck with it. It was not compatible with anything, software was limited,it was slow, and it crashed (or froze)as often as anything else... not to mention that it cost significantly more.
I have a brother=in-law that is a photographer, and he swears by the Mac for photo and video work. I think that personal taste, and what you are used to have as much to do with whether or not something works as actual function. If you are not comfortable with Mac, you are not going to like it.

If somebody wants to switch to a Mac, and is not invested in PC knowledge or software, I would recommend it. I think it is the better OS.

I would recommend that same person look hard at Ubuntu, as it is even more secure and more stable then the Mac, and runs on *dirt* cheap hardware.

If you invested in PC software, and are already comfortable with the warts, there is no reason a well maintained XP or Vista system should have any significant downtime short of hardware failures. It's a crappy OS with a LOT of duct tape... but the duct tape typically holds.

The OS cost is significant to me. I have 1 mac (an old wallstreet laptop, piece of crap IMHO), two linux boxes (one server, one thin client laptop), one XP desktop (dual processor), and my work laptop (XP).

I don't intend to buy another OS licenses if I can help it, so the Mac and the Windows machine are staying where they are at, and the new boxes get Linux.

PC's get obsolete? I'm still using my eight year old Dell Inspiron with Win 2000Pro. That thing is as bullet proof as I've seen any computer. The chassis is cheap and cracking and falling apart, but the thing still runs, and runs, and runs.

I'm in the market for a new laptop too. I think the Walmart way isn't a bad idea.

I'd like a good sized screen, but in the old non-wide screen format. I'd rather have taller than wider. Tough to find these days. And spare me the glossy screen, horribly for refelcting and glare. I like the old anti-glare type.

Anyone have any suggestions?

Laptop 1.0 http://www.etchy.org/

Very durable, rugged and easy to reboot, low instance of hacking occurrence, and inexpensive to replace. Troubled by limited input interface, but redeemed by traditional display image that will connect with clients and users alike. Lacks wireless capability, or functional print sharing. A growing public sector is actually eying it for a stand alone gaming console platform and integration into the Wii.

If cost is a primary factor, I would not hesitate to recommend linux.

Blake, since you are an admin with obvious love for simple interfaces. Spend the money and get yourself a copy of Windows server 2003.
I can honestly say it is the most stable OS I have ever used (including my beloved OSX). It works great as a desktop os with a few simple tweaks.

Oh yea I almost forgot about 03. Thats what i was using as my main OS before Vista. Rock solid, even more stable than DOS! Just after you install you need to enable sound and 3d video acceleration, and your set. : )
