Some ramblings from the "outside"

I've been on the Buell fence for quite some time in life. Own a Road King right now and had a Dyna in the past. The XB9S finally grew on me enough for me to make up my mind to get one. Started getting real serious about one when the prices dropped recently.

This past weekend I went to the vintage races at Mid-Ohio. Got to test ride a Firebolt. Not bad I was impressed with the power, the sitting position left alot to be desired and my right wrist reminded me that it doesnt like body weight at that angle on it for very long. (I have a nice Mtn bike thats been gathering dust for the same reason.)

So I left thinking that I need to get a test ride on a "S" to see if I like the position better.

Now the new sporty rumors are really flying around the web. And last night I got a verbal confirmation of the the Sporty rumors.

So the little voice in my head tells me to just chill until the end of Aug and see what is going on and make a choice. So till then I think I'll just continue my search for a good deal on a used machine and wait it all out.

Chris,
Buying a bike is sort of like buying a computer, there's three ways to do it new, and then there's used:
New bike:
1. Buy what you like that's available now.
2. Buy what you can afford now and forget what's coming down the pike.
3. Wait until the last possible moment when you just can't wait any longer and you're on your last gasp and are itching to ride so bad that you just can't stand it any longer and the rumors keep persisting and you keep listening and you're going zoom zoom in the shower and are fondling the toy motorcycles in the grocery store toy section everytime you go get a loaf of bread and you go to your preferred dealership and say what can you ride home on either today or Saturday at the latest and tell the salescritter to not give you any lip on what's coming maybe next week on the truck because you just have got to right now buy a bike to ride because the magazines and toys and rumors are just agitating you too much so you buy what floor stock they have and are happy and don't ever look back two weeks from now when what the salescritter said is on the way in the truck arrives because you are now riding what you bought regardless.

Used bike:
1. Buy what you like for the current market price in your price range.
2. Buy for the same price as a stock bike a bike that someone else has already upgraded with most of the stuff you were going to add anyway.

Just curious what Sport rumors you had verbally confirmed to you? Is it the Trevster?

Chrisb - I own an '89 FLHS, very similar to the Road King FLHR. I also own an XB9S. They are very different rides (duh).

You should test ride the 9S and then the new Sportster (883 or 1203?). I would imagine the new XL(?) would ride more like a big twin than a sport bike.

Plus, HD likes to use the 883 as a stepping stone to their real cash cows, the big twins. So they make (made?) the Sporty's to be fun but limited. (I once owned an '86 883.)

But then there is that nagging question about resale value...

Somehow I think the Sportster will continue on it's evolutionary journey into becoming a BabyBagger. Apart from a few minor diversions (1200Sport, XR1000, XLCH, XLCR Cafe) that is how most dealerships view it from what I've seen. Perhaps they're putting a FatBob on it finally from the factory.

Wait for the new sporty. You will like it.

If for some strange reason you must have a Buell, get the XB12S.

Personally I like used option number two. That's what I did and I love my bike.

MikeJ - the Trevster link is not working. So I cant say. Baby bagger...you hit the berm on that one.

I have a ride right now so I'm not dying. For right now I'll see if I can scare up a 9S demo ride.

I'm wondering if the trevster link got pulled from indirect insistence from the corp ship.

Chris-
I sold my sporty to get the '99 S3. There's no way I'd ever go back unless I got an absolute killer deal on an 883 to tool around town with or let my wife ride.
I ride my sportbikes 2-3 times as much as I ever did any other bikes I've owned. They are just too damn much fun.
In fact a neighbor of mine just asked me to ride to Pennsylvania with him this weekend for a week. Even though it's the wife's reunion this weekend I'm probably going to take him up on it. Nothing like an 1,100mi ride to clear the senses.

Anyone know a good divorce lawyer?
