I did a little research on Mitchell Paige...

http://www.homeofheroes.com/mitch/index.html

... he was a real honest-to-God hero.

It says in the link that Hasbro commisioned a Mitchell Paige GI Joe action figure in 1998, though, not that he was the model for the original.

I went on a lot of deployments (Rimpac, westpac, etc..) as part of the Tarawa battle group.

Being a Snipe (member of engineering on the ship) has advantages....A certain group of your
embarked units is giving you grief, you remind your buddies in A-gang that the A/C in that berthing
is due for "maintenance", and your buddies the HT's that you saw a leak in the head (bathroom)
closest to them etc... It got the point that it was "OUR house" across in short order

We also used to enjoy getting 3 or so guys to stand in line by a door, wait for the Marines
to get in line for whatever we were waiting for (refusing to tell them what we were in line
for, but implying it was GOOD) and then one by one leaving and waiting to see how long they
would stand in line.

Of course when we were underway the embarked Marines didn't really have that much to do...

Those were good times. I spent a lot of time going 'round and round with the Marines, but
I also spent a lot of time trading rounds of drinks with them on Liberty.

It's funny how people's minds work, the crew on the Juneau (LPD-10) were very tight
knit I guess because of the us versus them mentality while the similar sized crew on the
Wichita (AOR-1) was much more divided along department and even division lines because
your shipmates were the only "enemy" you had to deal with day to day.

I wouldn't trade those 6 years of my life with anyone.

I'm surprised that there weren't more Marine responses to my post by now.

this information about GI Joe not being an american hero anymore really pisses me off !

I watched the 80's GI joe cartoons when i was little (at that time they had members of GI joe that was army, navy, marines and air force) and knew that I wanted to be one. Now i realize that the 4 branches of the military are not like that but still that was a toy, comic, and cartoon For americans so why should it be changes after 60 years of it being and American icon to become an international icon. This is Bull Sh*t.

Sorta like what hammer said, saw a bumper sticker that said "Marines, department of the U.S. Navy, the mens department".

GI Joe - this is the result of the small few liberals taking over this country. Next up GIJOE will have Dr.Phils books instead of the rifle.

-- Court shooting a perfect score. Any other person that Court I would have called BS. As a plt high shooter from Bootcamp and a third award expert. The best I have ever done was 10/10 on the 300yd rapid fire. A perfect 300score (that the old scoring) is very rare.

With the Marine Corps birthday coming up and this thread being created I always like to get this webpage out there for all to read.
