but they should according to the rules of grammar

You should send them a email about that!

I think I will write "Apostrophe! You need an apostrophe!" on the side of a chocolate gun and then deliver it to them at their next gathering. And because I know that they are busy, I will run up to the toughest looking hombre and give it to him personally.

"Hell's" implies that there is only one hell and that the "Hell's Angels" are angels of THAT hell.

Their grammar is correct : ). You just have the wrong point of view.

I think you mean that it should be, Hells', with the apostrophe after the "s." No point of view makes it a possessive without the apostrophe.

You see how quickly these fights over the rules of grammar can escalate. Surprising that more people aren't in that Arkansas hospital...

There are 4 for the stabbings because of the interference by the Bandidos on the Anniversary of the HA's, but there are hundreds of grammar related stabbing incidents, called "Grammar Rage"

Has English punctuation been changed recently?

Hell's Angels would be the possessive form for the angels that are from hell. And I think that was the original intent of using the name. They simply did not get it right. And probably did not care.

Hells would be the plural form of hell. I'm not sure that there is such a word.

Hells' would be the possessive form of the plural noun hell. So that is not right.

They should have talked this over, maybe even formed a committee to study it a little. I think if they had, the club would have been called the "Angels of Hell" to eliminate any confusion or ambiguity.

That confusion and ambiguity is dangerous stuff, the next thing you know people are confronting you on the street about it, dissent can arise, and even anti social behavior.

Jack--

M1 had suggested that the point of view was that there was more than one hell, hence "hells angels." Then I pointed out that it would be " hells' " angels if that were the case.

Looks like we might have to settle this in Eureka Springs.

The reason why there is no apostrophe is because there are (in their opinion), "many hells".

From what I understand, that is the reason.

I did miss M1's original implication or meaning.

But I'm not sure that the club, or even the world in general, agrees that the name was intended to imply multiple hells.

Some think it was spun off of the 30's movie Hell's Angels and through the use of that movie's name by a WW II USAAC B-17 bomber group. Those details are disputed.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hells_Angels

As an aside, anyone that has ever heard a big radial like the B-17's Wright R-1820-97 at idle might suggest that there was a similarity in that sound to a few (three and a half?) H-D motorcycles at idle.

I have no admiration or fondness for the group. They are an thing of our times and both veil manipulate their true character, if their is such a thing, to best serve their own purposes. Like lawyers, politicians, masons, religious prophets, and zealots of every other ilk.

Let's form a fully chartered and documented motorcycle club based around Buell ownership and call it the Heaven's Devils. Or even the Heavens Devils. As soon as we are noticed, I'll bet we hear from the lawyers of the Hells Angels.

Maybe they signed up online and it said,

"Name. (You aren't allowed to use punctuation)"

Jack... come up to Lebanon Ohio (actually just a bit north of there) on a sunny weekend, and I will take you to a local airfield where you can take a ride ($75, a steal) for 30 minutes on a radial engine open cockpit biplane (pre WWW2, an old trainer). Its a fantastic experience.

The plane came (no kidding) right out of Wright Patt AFB Museum. A guy had a few single wing trainers stashed away, the museum had several biplanes but no single wing trainers, and the rest is history.

It's a very cool experience, with or without apostrophes.

Reep,

If I ever get that way I'll keep the offer in mind. I coughed up a $300 donation last year and took a ride on Sentimental Journey. I felt good about the money going into the kitty to preserve her.

Just by dumb luck, I got to do the takeoff in the bombardier's position in the nose. There is not a better seat in the house than that. Finished the flight as

The plane you describe sounds like a Stearman trainer, the PT-17. The single wing trainer was probably the PT-19. I love the old planes for their mechanicals and stuff, but I have never been a pilot or wanna be pilot. Never had the time or money to get started on it.

After re-reading the thread I think I've come to the most obvious conclusion: The Hells Angels didn't think about the apostrophe and really don't give a ats rass about grammar rules, anyway.

Cool Jack... I actually felt bad about only paying $75 for the flight. Hard to imagine they can keep the thing in the air for that much.

It can't be that easy to get parts and do rebuilds on that thing... and I love the idea that the thing is and stays in the air.

The pilot even did some deliberate stalls and spins, finishing with a stopped engine for me before landing... we glided right onto the grassy field, dead silent.

Rainman:

We were joking around. Everybody knows they don't care about punctuation; it's misused verb tense that gets them riled.

Didn't Sonny Barger get busted for dangling his modifier?
