Sounds like the Granddad in the "Pickles" comic strip in regards to his wife's insistence on growing zucchini in her garden every year.

You Okra-eaters are all so wrong in so many ways!

Okra is the devils-own food.

Like eating a garden slug with less flavor

Breading and frying? If you like fried bread AND garden slugs...

If I found that by eating okra, the whole human race would be immune from disease, war and plagues - I'd say screw the human race, everybody has to die sometime.

Okra... arrrggggh...

I am kinda questioning why I ever hung out with them????
Musta been the alcohol, though I still did not eat the okra or the vegemite.

FMJ - not sure if there's enough alcohol to get me to face okra in a room or back alley alone.

I've eaten all manner of critter (cooked and raw) and vegetable - but Okra... dunno.

Dang - and I thought arguments about motorcycles, beers, cigars, religion, and wimmenz could be rough - there are some people here trying to get me to "see the light" of Okra.

I'm a-skeered.

Okra. . . let me set the record straight . . to be "good" MUST be cooked in Texas.

Texicans, you see, have the vision to take something that in it's natural form might kill you and perform one of the Texas miracles on it. . . .they toss it in batter and deep fat fry it.

Now . . . I don't have what some would term "high standards" in what I see fit to eat. But if it's deep fat fried and not particularly good for you . . . it's almost a sure bet I'll like it.

We used to go to Joe Willie's in Dallas . . .you'd get a chicken fried steak (which also benefits from the dip me/fry me miracle) a tub of Lone Star and 5# of fries.

You slather real Texas Chicken Gravy (think raw lard broken down by boiling, combined with all the artery cloggers you can stuff into it) over the steak, fries and okra and you have what I call "Texican Health Food".

Texas, with all it's wonder, is one of the places that is worth going JUST to eat. My favorites include Mexican about anywhere in Cameron or Winkler County. . . steak anywhere in the North Houston area . . and anything fried on Central Expressway.

Call me spoiled . . .

By the way . . . someone is going to toss BBQ into this conversation. I'm not sure it really belongs here but let me say that if you eat BBQ in Texas and miss Mac's on Main Street down by Fair Park . . . well, you've been served "tourist food".

Hehehehe. . . .don't mistake me for a New Yorker.

I have to agree with Court on the Chicken Fried Steak, it's a Texas miracle;
I've somehow managed to miss/avoid the okra when I've been to the US. phew.

Monsieur Grumpee',
You simply MUST travel to Austin to partake of our fine Texas cuisine, including Lady's Finger Frites (fried okra)! 'Course, Ah'll take y'all out to some true Central Texas barbecue (none 'o that Damn Yankee Dallas stuff...no offense, Court ;)),
like Louis Mueller's in Taylor:
http://www.louiemuellerbarbeque.com/
or anywhere in Lockhart:
http://www.lockhart-tx.org/web98/visitors/bbqcapit aloftexas.asp
Gotta warn ya, though; most of these joints don't have fried okra. In fact, most of 'em don't even have plates and you might have to beg 'em for a fork. You eat off of butcher paper and discover you don't mind at all!
'Course, my mama makes the best fried okra I've ever had; pan fried, not deep fried, and oh so crispy! Y'all ever had fried pickles? Mmmm, mmmmm! I've started noticing lot's 'o places featuring deep fried jalapeno slices too. Talk about internal burn!

I'm out of pocket for just a bit and look what happens. We're having a high level intellectual discussion about the righteousness of okra, and end up in Texas?
How do you think they learned about okra in Texas anyway? Those old boys from Tennessee loaded up some beans, bacon ,okra, and cornmeal, and the ones that got lost on the way to the Alamo taught the Texicans how to cook okra, in a skillet. Cast iron, of course.
Man, now I'm hungry for chicken fried steak and BBQ, got neither, guess I'll just go fry up some Spam.

Jay, I keep meaning to get back to Austin, it's a lovely place & one of my best friends lives there too he's Union Jack Plumbing, if you see Nick say hi, he rides a Triumph 675. His son plays fiddle a lot around there too, that's Damian Green, check him out if you can. http://www.damiangreenband.com/
Got a lot of fond memories of my visit to Texas, specially the Continental Club, & Broken Spoke, also caught Commander Cody & the Lost Planet Airmen while there.

Okra is the tame Jalapeno! There are things southern that are in the kitchen that the rest of the country just doesnt get. Chittlins, Greens, Black Eyed Beans, Ham Hock Stew, Hush puppies, Okra, Jambalaya, crawdads, Gumbo, dirty rice, and of course eggs fried in LARD ... Makes me home sick up here in the Great NorthWest. Could you would you in a boat, could you would you at a moat, would could you eat deep battered Fried Okra?

>>>>does mountain oysters go good with okra?

Actually yes . . . and I've recently had to make a big deal out of how good Mountain Oysters and Turkey Fries are.

The local Italians take great pleasure and break into gleeful jubilation whenever I decide I'd prefer to not try something. Hot peppers and tripe

quote:

American Heritage Dictionary - Cite This Source tripe (trīp) Pronunciation Key
n.
The rubbery lining of the stomach of cattle or other ruminants, used as food.

just hold no attraction for me.

A couple weeks ago when I became the mobs laughing stock I explained that I may not dig tripe but I love RMO. I suggested I fry up a bunch and we'd just go mono y mono downing them babes.

I offered to show them by pictures of when we used to "nut" cattle and always kept a bucket on the fire we used to heat branding irons and cauterizing knife.. Hell, even the dogs know good food . . used to cut a sack, grab the nut, make the cut and throw it and Chief would chase after that.

As good as Italian food is, I've never seen anyone set up and beg or chase it through a pasture of Bluestem.

Hey . . I enjoy my food!
