My 97 S1 quit charging the other day. I figured it was the voltage regulator so I replaced it. No luck, it still wasn't charging so I figured it had to be the stator that was bad. I pulled the primary and immediately noticed a problem. There were tiny bits of magnets and copper wire scattered throughout the primary. I pulled the cover off of my stator and there were 4 bolts loosely mingled with the magnet soup inside the cover. What the hell caused this. I have never touched the stator although I did replace the tranny in my bike a couple of months back. I haven't pulled the transmission yet but I am hopeful that it is OK. BTW, there were 4 torx bolts holding the winding to the case and those were, for the most part, intact. I am curious where the 4 loose bolts(regular head not torx) belong. Thanks for any help and I know this probably belongs in the KV section but I wanted to get a quick response so I could get it back on the road by this weekend.

Your service manual ought to indicate where the four bolts belong. Don't mean do be an ass, but that is your best resource for solving such problems. You might want to check the integrity of the output shaft nut while you are at it. Make sure it is tight. The four bolts you found are probably the ones that should be holding the alternator rotor (bowl shaped rotor containing magnets) to the sprocket.

Blake, I have a service manual that I downloaded from the UKbeg website but 2 sections were corrupt and I cannot open them. Guess which 2 sections? Your right, the 4 bolts are intended to mount the rotor to the sprocket. I now know what the problem is and how to fix it but I can't figure out why the bolts sheared in the first place. When I reassembled the primary drive after replacing the transmission I never touched the rotor or the stator. Any tips to prevent this from happening again????? Thanks

Check output shaft nut and bearings. Vibration may have caused the failure of the bolts. This may be a sign of larger problems.

This is a common failure. HD updated the rotor/sprocket assembly a few years ago and it's now held with 8 bolts instead of 4. Be sure to get the updated unit.
