My new helmet is coming soon and I want to get a tinted visor. What is better? I like the reflective but is just tinted better. I would like something that I can use day and night. | ||

I use a mirrored visor on my HJC CL14, but I don't like it. It reflects back from the inside and the mirrored tint scrapes off very easily. I'm going smoke tinted next time. Neither is appropriate for night riding. | ||

I have a road-legal iridium visor and even though the coating is very mild it changes the colour of what you're looking at. My road-illegal tinted visor is optically superb and is my #1 choice for sunny days. There's no way I would use either of them for riding at night. | ||

Got the Schuberth, clear shield, slide the lever down, dark shield, slide it up and clear again. You always leave the house with both visors and don't even have to change them. | ||

I've got a silver mirrored Shoei that is really great in the sun, and absolutely horrible at night. If there is even a remote possibility of being out in the dark I use the stock clear shield. | ||

Smart move. I, when going long distances, keep a spare visor with me (long story from the Arbuckle Mountains 3AM - 19oF - 1997) and if there is any chance of it getting dark on me, I go clear. I got caught one night trying to stretch a long leg from Sacramento to Yuba City. Those of you from the area, know there are few more bug infested places in the world that the rice paddies along that highway. I was trying to "peek" out of a very dark visor.....bad news. The funniest one that ever comes to mind was coming off Deal's Gap. Just as Chauly (I call him Chuck) and I passed the Crossroads of Time...Kaboom...major toad strangler. . . torrential downpour. I'm on an S-3 following him on an ST100 when all of a sudden I coughed. It was terrribly humid, we'd hit a band of cold air, I was wearing dark Ray-Ban aviators and had a dark visor. The moment I coughed the entire world fogged over like an IFR training exercise. I started reciting the mantra......."follow that red dot; he can't go anywhere you can't go". Since then, I err on the side of clear. | ||

schuberth here as well -- there are a couple of other lids with built-in deployable shade -- Caberg (eyetalian, available under a couple of names) and others -- my, I LOVE not having to change sheilds -- it's a major benefit that keeps me with achuberth in spite of the pricitudes | ||

There are visor films that you can buy that tint in the sun like the "Transitions" glasses. | ||

I just use the clear visor all the time and wear a pair of sunglasses for day riding in case the ride ends up after dark. Most glasses can be worn with a helmet. | ||

I got the clear & Iridium shields for my new Suomy. Of course, I got running late at a friends house & "had" to run 60 miles back home, in the dark with the Iridium one. Not gonna happen again. I stuck to expressway, & kept my speed down. Still, up on a ridge, I did not see the dead dear till I was way too close to dodge. In a spate of pure luck, I twitched ( No claim for skill here, pure luck ) and rode down the only part of a 2 lane road that did not have chunks at least as large as a basketball, the right tire track of the last semi to run over this poor ( big ) guy. There were bits in the fast lane with no clear path, upper torso in my usual path ( left side of slow lane ) back end from the edge of the right tire print well onto the right shoulder. I've never seen a deer this dismembered. All this in a quick flash as I zipped through the carnage. Thank the diety of your choice. I did. Don't wear dark shields at night. legal disclaimer: on a closed course, I have to be making this up to keep a fellow badwebber from killing himself, & it happened to someone else, so don't bust me, ok? oh yeah, I like the looks of the reflective shield. I got Blue, & it's really dark & cool in the sun. It's a space helmet look, but may cause some folk to be uncomfortable, since you cannot see a face, at all. If I am running the Iridium I have the Clear in the bag, if I am running the clear I have the Iridium in the bag. I don't have one of those fancy helmets with build in tinted visors... though I wouldn't mind one. I'm not lazy, and with the stock seat, my rear appreciates it when I dismount to switch them out. You can't see a face with mine either, that is in fact why I bought it. I don't want people to see me.. especially my wife when I'm riding downtown and see some young women walking along. It has its advantages as well as its disadvantages. I think it looks sharper than the norm. Note: this is an older picture, but it still shows the helmets "reflectivity" (new word???).  | ||

I have a Scorpion Helmet and it has a Everclear coating on the Smoke and clear that keeps it from fogging up, and works Great. They have a new shield that is photosensitive and changes with the Sun, but as of yet I have not seen one and I am not sure how well it works. | ||

I have the "light smoke" for my rf1000 and wear it all the time, while in town. I like it at night because it knocks the glare off the lights. In town there is plenty of lighting available and it is plenty easy to see. It is a little dark for out of town night use. | ||

I run a dark smoke during the day and carry a clear in my tank bag, or backpack in case of bad weather, or running late getting home. | ||

I wear a tinted/mirrored visor also, but I do wear clear glasses underneath the visor. The visibility at night is not terrible with the visor down. But, I like to get every bit vision when hammering corners. My Scorpion helmet has a quick release feature so you can swap visors on the fly, I'm just too lazy to carry a spare visor with me. | ||

I wore sun glasses underneath my clear visors for years, but lately have been going through the trouble to alternate between tinted and clear for day and night. Wearing glasses underneath my helmet is just too distracting and a bit uncomfortable. Thank goodness (and modern technology) for contact lenses. | ||

I go with light smoke and a set of MotoX plastic goggles in my tank bag somewhere. Couldn't find a replacement shield for my helmet and for about 6 months I ran with goggles and a baklava underneath at nite, It was winter and I was commuting 300 miles to grad school in Opalocka, Fl. Made every 9am class by leaving at 3:30am, it was cold even for Fl. in Dec/Jan/Feb. Down on mon's back on thu/fri. | ||

Tinted--daylight only Clear--nighttime I found that a mild yellowish tinted lens that's great during the day, when riding at night cuts out too much light. I bought a clear shield, my glasses darken in the sunlight anyway. (Message edited by old man on July 30, 2006) | ||

i dont like wearing sunglasses under my helmet - makes my head and ears hurt, and i like the "cant see your face" of a tinted visor. i have both a dark smoke and a mirrored shield for my shoei. the mirror looks cool, but scratched easily and thats annoying to look through. i prefer the dark. D | ||

I like the Schuberth option.I have a Showie though and chose the best sunglasses for wearing in a full face helmet.These "Maui Jims" brand have Ti wire ear pieces and are very light and unobtrusive.  | ||

i have a light smoke and a clear. i try to swap out the shields when i know i'm going to be out at night. but the light smoke isn't too terrible at night (with both headlights on). | ||

I have NO idea where i'd store extra shields for changing out on a ride.At least with simple sunglasses i can store them underseat.I have precious little stowage. | ||

Use a tube sock to protect the shield, then wear it inside your jacket around where your kidneys are. If you don't have anywhere else to carry it. I've done that, before I had the need to carry a cane in a bag. | ||

I use those "Solar Shields" that blue hairs in Boca all style in. Easy on-the-fly change, and they fit in my fullface just fine. I found once, blasting through the midwest, that having clear shop glasses (the all-plastic oversize wraps) and a pair of solar shields allows on-the-fly eye-protection tint-change. Plus when i sneeze, i don't get snot all over my faceshield, being that i don't wear one with the solar shields. (Message edited by tramp on July 30, 2006) |
