Someone offer advice,

I have a gas tank off a 1998 S1 White Lightning with cracks in the paint and bubbled stickers.

What is the best way to get the old paint off and what kind of primer can I use on it before I get it painted?

I am open to any ideas, colors, etc, etc. If not its going to be the same color as stock. I am also considering a carbon fiber tail section, front fender and flyscreen.

I also noticed my stock S1 handle bars are striking the new tank when turned all the way in each direction. Will they work or will I have to get S3/S3T bars?

The only reason for changing is the fact that I get petroleoum challenged on longer rides and need the extra.

Thanks,

Bill

Bill,
I put the large tank on my S-1, rotated the bars just a very little bit and they clear the new tank. In fact, my bars have been shortened an inch off each end so the controls are moved as close to the center as possible and they still clear. My tank is also blistered (which is why I got it so cheap)so I am interested in seeing what you get for painting suggestions.

Bill...I concur with Mickey---rotating the bars ever so slighly makes a big difference in clearance at full "lock". I picked up a cheap bubbled S1W tank for my M2 beater ...I painted both (my old narrow tank also cracked paint but old style decals) to have them interchangeable. Just shot with automotive primer and then automotive base coat/clear coat with no problems thus far. As far as sanding I started out with 600 grit and wet sanded by hand to cut thru the original clear and get to the color coat. Then repeated heavy layers of primer to fill the cracks and gradually reduced grit to get smooth and cracks filled. I didn't try to remove all of the old paint.
One word of caution...be careful when sanding so you don't smooth down the edges/contours of the tank. Good luck.

Bill,

The bars were different for the S1W. I'm not sure about rotating the bars. The X1 & S1W bars are the same. I'm not sure if the clamps on the triple tree is different on the S1 & S1W.
