Well when they can sell them for $50.00 a pop for a $0.10 item I would say that little light bulb went on in their head. If they made a good pump gear to start with we wouldn't have to beg for good quality parts in our motors. So now I have another thing to worry about with the old Cyclone? My pump gear gonna bite the dust and take out my motor? This kind of price gouging just makes me disgruntled. I know HD is the king of gouging and most likely are behind this. Sell the frigging gear for $20.00!

50 bucks is a little high. But keep in mind HD gears are some of the best and hardest gears on the planet. They do wear and break like everything else does in the world though.

This is a spiral gear even when they wear down and dont break they turn into something than can explode . Just like any worn out spiral gear. Reconizing that I hope this gear is very close to government standards, meaning that it should last 3-4 times as long as the old ones.

Would be great if someone could post a hardness test.

Hell, the price of the gear isn't the big cost. What scared me off last year was the quote Hal's gave me to install it.

Am very glad I waited as I didn't want to replace it with the SOS.

Bud... I don't think the problem was with the gear. That does not mean you can't *fix* the problem with the gear though.

$50 is pricey, no doubt. I would have paid twice that if it was available when I had the Cyclone apart.

Not every bike will need these, just some. The ones that do need them though, should be thrilled to get one, even if it is $50.

i agree it's just a fix,
the xb's seems more friendly on the pomp gear
and hard ( very hard ) riding seems to speed up the ware,
but my honest opion is that it's alinement thing with some clearance things

but for the $50 gear, i would have payed 2x as much for it, iff my engine was still apart

Somebody else was speculating (probably correctly) that the wear problem was related to tolerance stack and machining of the cases. I am inclined to agree, but it is still speculation.

Basically, some older Buells eat oil pump drive gears. When the gear goes, the engine blows.

You should definately inspect a 2k cyclone, my 2k cyclone had the problem. Some time after 10k miles or so, when you are doing an oil change anyway, just drop the oil pump (not a hard job) and look up in the cam cavity and look for wear. Blip the starter and recheck a few times, the wear is typically VERY uneven.

If you are good, you are good, button up and get back on the road. If you are eating up gears, get the new improved part (how many times have I typed *THAT* phrase on this board) and replace it. The manual says you need to remove the rocker box gaskets to do this, talk to us first, there may be a way to avoid that. We have not tried it though.

It would be interesting to know what color cams were in the problem bikes. They color code them so they can fit right, based on how the case ended up after machining (hint hint). Mine were black.

Looks to be brass. Is the stock one brass? This is the one item (foolishly) I've never looked at.

Stock is some sort of steel. Zippers had a bronze one, I expect that is what this one is. It sure looks nice.

Ti nitride is just a surface treatment, don't know if that would solve the hardness issue, there are bronze alloys that are quite tuff and wear resistant that might be what the new gear is made from

i agree with bomber.
i am always amazed at the concept of shelling out
hundreds of dollars for lighter footpegs carbon fiber accents and polished accessories, but whining about 50 clams for an integral engine upgrade.
Buell mc can't get a break. when they have a service issue, everyone screams about it and
moans about being ignored by the factory. when the mothership DOES respond, everyone moans about the fifty dollar pricetag.

they'd sell like hotcakes

kinda like reroofing your house -- month a hot, boring work (unless your altitude challenged like me, then it's a month of hot terrifying work), and no one notices the difference
