Let's say you have a choice when you buy your next Buell. You can have ANY torque curve profile you want but with one stipulation, between 2500 and redline, it must average to 80 FT-LBs. So, do you want...

1. A flat 80 FT-LB curve, much like Kevin Hern's awesome Nallinized machine?

2. A more humped profile with say a peak of 90 FT-LB in the midrange and tapering to 60 FT-LB at the low and high rev points?

3. A racer's torque curve with little to nothing down low but near 100 FT-LB in the upper mid range then dropping to 80 FT-LB at redline.

4. A tractor curve, with 100 FT-LBs down low dropping off to quickly above 5000 rpm to end up with around 60 FT-LB or less at redline.

5. Something else?

Me, I think I'd prefer FAT arm stretching low end and midrange, so a mildly humped curve that sacrifices top end torque (HP) for more low end and mid range. My peak HP won't be impressive, but my roll on performance will be stellar.

Define your use and needs, then find the curve that fits. Since you're maybe looking at doing the track thing I'd say lean toward the humpbackwhale curve, average out #1 #2 #3 and you'll probably be happy. Your gears/tranny is too wide to really utilize #3 stock, unless you totally forget street use and rebuild the tranny to where your first gear is around your current second gear, then step up from there, then maybe that #3 would be fun. For a street bike though with a stock 5-speed I'd want #1 for all around use (and the occaisional blue light special).
IMHO of course.

#1. Dead flat line from start to finish.

I'm all for the flat-line curve.

Number 1! Dead flat = perfect throttle control. Anyone seen the one from the Firebolt yet?

It must be the farmer in me but I like that tractor torque. Punchin through the twistes would be fun especialy while plowing!

I have M2 cams and a stock header/muffler in my fuel injected 99 S3, but I have not dynoed it yet. I know, someday I'll do it!

My "butt-o-meter" tells me that my torque curve is closest to #2 as you described it. 60-80 top gear passes sure are fun, however!

No, but Buell tells us that the bike makes 68 lb/ft at 5500 rpm, and 92 hp at 7200.

Which means that it makes 71 hp at 5500 rpm and 67 lb/ft at 7200.

That's pretty flat (68 to 67 lb/ft) between 5500 and 7200 rpm.

It probably still has that pesky EPA dip somewhere around 3500 rpm, but I'm just guessing.

The smile on Erik's face at the Tour last summer told me that the EPA-dip has most likely been fixed. It would be nice to see a dyno chart of one though.

Okay, that's it, DaveGess, when you receive your XB9R you are hereby requested to promptly ride it to Colorado. And Aaron, when Dave arrives you are hereby requested to put his bike through the dyno-paces. There, that should do it.

#1 - flat as can be = predictable throttle response everywhere.

First one to post a genuine verifiable stock XB9R dyno chart will recieve the first BadWeB T-Shirt to come off the press.

Mine is most like 2 & that would be my choice. Just over 90 at 3900 tapering off to about 72 at 6800. Has about 77 at 3000. Definitely not as predictable throttle response as before headwork, cams, & a Mikuni was installed. Comes on pretty whicked when it does, but that makes it fun. Very usable power range.

Of course I like #1; that's what I had Jeff at Yankee Enginuity build for me!!! I go over 80 ft-lbs at 2500 RPM; it's over 90 from 3000 to red line of 7000, peaking at 105 at about 4800...ant that's with stock heads and cams (but not much else is stock...)
