Well I finally made it to SD and the 1st thing I did was lay the S3 down. BUMMER.

Cruising state road 11, headed for Garretson, when all of a sudden a sign says "ROAD CLOSED". No detours, no explaination just blocked-off black-top and one option to divert down a gravel side road. No problem, we do gravel every day. Anyway, long story short I eventually wound up right back on the state road only now it's all gravel. I get out on it heading north when the gravel vanishes and now it's pure mud, 3-4" of slimy muck. The bike went down so fast I didn't even have time to react, just slid along behind it until my helmet head-butted the seat 10 yards later.

Ripped off both blinkers, the left hard-bag and broke the shifter lever off. A few minutes later some construction guys show up and help me lift the bike and wheel it over to dry ground (1.5" rain the previous night). I cleaned the mud off, dug my vice grips out of the tool bag and fabricated a temporary shifter (w/ the help of a nearby tree limb and some wire) and we're back on the road in less than an hour.

The up side? I've discovered the folks at J&L HD/Buell in Sioux Falls, SD are awesome. They red-tagged the needed parts, jockied their service schedule to get me in, and by tonight the S3 will be back to 100%

Sorry to hear that..Glad you where able to get it all back together.

Did you ride through any nasty weather? We had some pretty bad storms roll though my area and I think a few went your way.

there's been thunder storms and showers every night this week. I sure picked the wrong month to spend any time in SD. At least from a biker's point of view. I've got mud in places I didn't know existed. Time to put some knobbies on the Buell...

Daves,
I was a mess, to be sure. I belly-flopped off the bike and slid through the mud until I caught up w/ it. My leathers were totally coated in a couple inches of slime from head to toe. The soft mud is what spared me any serious damage, to both the bike and myself. It'll probabley take the rest of the summer to get all the dried mud off the bike.

Rek; glad you're ok. Bike parts can be replaced. People parts - well, the OEM equipment is always preferable, and repairs are not always pretty.
