I've got an 02 X1 with about 28k miles. It has gotten progressively harder to start (since I bought it in 2010 with 9k miles).

If the bike hasn't been started in a few days or weeks, I normally need to crack the throttle after starting and keep it cracked for 30-120 seconds. If I let off, it sputters and dies.

Once it's warmed up, it seems to run normally. If I stop (during a ride) for 15 min or less it'll instantly fire back up. Anything longer and it'll need at least a blip to the throttle. In cold weather, it's worse. Problem had slowly/steadily gotten worse over the years.

Is this what most folks experience? Are there any likely culprits or ways to fix?

How many rpms is it running in the cold start ? TRY RUNNING MORE rpms by cable under fuel tank. 1100 rpms for cold start for 1 or 2 mins.

If that adjuster cable is still buried under the tank cut the zip tie and make it accessible. I always cranked it up a bit before starting from cold and then backed it off after a few minutes.

Could be the CPS sensor going as well, known to cause hard starting.

Thanks for the input, everyone. I have the bike set to idle at 1100 rpms (when it's totally warm). It sounds like the suggestion is to use the idle adjuster like a kind of choke and turn it up before I start?

Re: CPS, I was kind of wondering about this. Can't find an easy way to test, aside from replacing it. Or did I miss something obvious?

Cam position sensors can exhibit a few different symptoms when they begin to fail, but the most common is misfires and or ignition shutdown - as the unit heats up.
Although it might sound cliched, consider a TPS re-set if it’s been awhile, Intake seal age or intake manifold position (between the heads) can also contribute to cold start behavior - and maybe worth checking if a TPS re-set doesn’t help.

When I got my S1 the choke wasn't working, so I used to have to adjust the idle every single time I started it, and would gradually turn it down and down every time I hit a stop sign. I wouldn't consider it your permanent solution, hopefully you'll figure out the cause, but it does work perfectly fine for a while.

I'd try the intake manifold seals, they dry out and leak particularly when cold.

I can't remember exactly how recently I've done intake (and exhaust) seals, but it's definitely been in the last 5k miles. I've changed them ~4 times since purchasing the bike (9k - 28k miles) and have never noticed a huge difference in the progressively harder starts. Have reset TPS in semi-recent history too, but hasn't seemed to change anything.

I just ordered a CPS and will see if that makes a difference. Figure it won't be terrible to have a spare CPS on hand, if it doesn't resolve the issue.

I appreciate all the advice and will update the thread once I install the CPS : ).

Thanks I’d be interested to see if that were the culprit. All the ones I’ve seen with known failure were seeping some of the hermetic goop on top of the sensor itself.

Have you gone in with ECM-Spy and seen how it is running AFV etc?

mine starts fine enough when cold, but needs a really long warm up. Otherwise it backfires through the intake and generally runs crapily.

Mstrfrz - The symptoms you describe are classic signs of a lean mixture.

If it has been some time since your intake seals have been replaced, like ever, that would be on my list of things to do.

Then routine service/maintinaince things like a TPS reset, and checking the AVF.

Hmm. I put in new injectors recently, with a TPS reset. Couldn't get EXACT replacements, so I went a hair bigger making lean not likely from that standpoint. However, via the O@ sensor, it could holding back because it's detecting more fuel. And yes, the intake seals have been done in, like, never. All things to check. AFV is 110, so you may be right. Time for some brake cleaner and a test.
