Just purchased a 2001 X1 tonight. Hopefully saving it from becoming a chopper over the winter.
Rear shock feels like a pogo stick. Sure it's bad. And could be a race tech rebuild possibility.

However...... the guy gave me this other rear shock with it. But it is longer. Hopefully y'all can shed some light for a NOOB. Trying to upload pics but keeps saying file size is too large.
Thanks in advance.

There were two lengths of rear shocks.
The 16.5" long shock was used from, at least, 1989 through about 2000.
After that a 14.6" long shock was used.
The difference in mounting was the front shock mount. Shocks are interchangeable IF you have the proper front mount!!
These front shock mounts can be purchased used on Ebay. They are easy to identify which is which as one is much straighter than the other.

Please do post a photo as that long shock he gave you may be a recall one, which will be unsafe to use!

That is the recall shock with the fix.
The fix was:
A strap around the back eye, in case the weld holding the eye to the shock broke.
A strap around the front shaft. Fear was the front shaft was so skinny that it might bend.

So, this long shock is ugly, but safe to use.

89rs1200 thank you!

I have already put in an offer for that same bracket before you sent the link. Hahaha
Hopefully it should work out. And I will keep the 14.7 update bracket for a rainy day.

At least you will be able to ride and save your money for a GOOD shock from: Penske $1000.00, Works $800.00, or Twin Motorcycles 499 Euro ($522 USD).

I have a spare one of those shock mounts, I was about to say I'll sell it to you cheaper than the one on ebay, but after a quick search I see there's already 2 on ebay for $27 shipped in case he doesn't accept your best offer...

If for some reason you have a color preference, the one I have was from an S2, so it's a chrome/silver color instead of the black, I'll sell it for $30 shipped, because it's a brick and I assume not cheap to ship.

Holy crap. What did he do to the installed shock?
Use a B.F. screwdriver to turn the body?

x

Perhaps he didn't see the jam nut?
