At the risk of showing my ignorance, does changing the shock preload affect handling, ride, or it'll just affect suspension geometry, e.g., raise/lower the (rear) height, etc.?
I have an X1 and for reference, I weigh 150lbs, at 6'2", and my shock preload has always been set at factory spec using the distance measurement guide between the two mounting eyelets.

Adjusting the preload will adjust the sag, or height of the rear, which will affect your geometry as you mentioned. This geometry change will affect the way the bike handles, for example raising the back will decrease your rake angle on the front end causing the bike to steer sharper but also be less stable. Lowering the rear will have just the opposite affect. I also ride an X1 and am 155lbs at 5'11" and I use the factory settings as well. Only change I've made is dropping the forks in the triple to sharpen the steering.

Preload is just spring tension and has no affect on damping.

One thing for sure: Setting you suspension up for RACING while riding on the street will make you bike SAFER !!!
