Hey
I am still battling over my wreck from back in 2011. The insurance is saying there is very little damage to the bike (I was rear ended), but I content the rear tire took the hit. I am trying to get Buell or any other weekend engineer to explain how the rear shock taking a hit would do to the bike.
In my case the bike flew out from under me and landed 15 to 20 feet out in front of me.

There would have been alot more damage if the shock was attached at the rear axle like regular set ups.....

I think it would be how fast was what ever hit you in the rear, was moving on impact. had you used the brakes hard?
you must have lost your grip on the hand grips, so get a hard hit on back wheel would not matter where the shock was mounted, as the rear shock on all bikes designed to absorb shock from below not from the rear.

Check the engine case really good around the lower shock mount bolt hole. Would be best if you can pull the mount. A good rear ender usually cracks the case through that hole. Here's one that was in process of being repaired.
