Have a 99 Buell that is not starting. I've been doing a major overhaul of it including chopping off the tail and relocating all the electrical. It was working great before I started messing with it. I've got spark and air but no fuel. Here's what I've done for troubleshooting thus far:

- Fuel pump has been out of old tank and into a new tank. I did verify that it is powering up when ignition goes on (makes the appropriate noises).
- I pulled the injectors out. No fuel to them. However pre injector I do have fuel to. When cranking the bike there is fuel being pumped out under some pressure. However, I will note the pressure isn't real high from my "thumb test".

No gas coming through the injectors. My thoughts are either:
a) Not enough pressure from fuel pump? If so, how do I test this?
b) Injectors aren't letting fuel through? They don't appear to be plugged. They do have electrical plugs to them. Is it possible I'm not getting electricity? If so, how do I test.

Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

When cranking the bike there is fuel being pumped out under some pressure. However, I will note the pressure isn't real high from my "thumb test".

Needs 50 psi. No need to crank to check pressure, Hook up a gauge to the Schrader valve on the tank outlet, turn Ign. switch on and note psi, thumb test doesn't prove shit on a FI system. }

It was working great before I started messing with it.
..as it was running fine when I started this project.


Sometimes its better to leave well enough alone.

I hope your "Project" looks better than what the "Janitor" built.lol

Jramsey, that's harsh man! :-). Will post a pic when I'm at computer. Took the back end off the bike and put on a tractor style seat and steel oil tank

Also, what's the harbor freight tool I need for measuring fuel pressure?

Check with local auto parts stores; they often have specialty tools for loan to customers.

And once you confirm 50psi at the Schrader valve, check at the fuel rail. If good there, are the injectors working? An ECMspy check here would be advised. Verify the other stuff first.

You do have the service manual, don't you?

Akbuell, thanks. I do have a service manual but not the specialty tools. Never had a fuel injected bike before. . . .

Here's a picture of the bike with a test fit of tank, etc. (sitting in place). I picked it up cheap off Craigs list after the last owner laid it over. It had sat in his shed for years. Got it running and then promptly took the back end off to make it look a little more old school. . . .

Won't have time to work on it for a few weeks now, but will try the fuel pressure test next.

AKBuell, one last question if you haven't lost patience yet. . . Where do I get the ECMSpy software? I went to the site, but was confused on both what version of software I need and on what the donation was. Also couldn't figure out where to actually download. Is there a specific version I should be looking for? I found the cable on Amazon that I can order for it, but want to figure out what software first.

To paraphrase the ads, Buells are different. And thanks for mentioning this is your first injected bike. So doubly different.

The hardware (ECM module, injectors, ect) are pretty stout. Sensors, wiring, connectors not so much. So, since the bike was running before, I suspect the problem is somewhere in the changes. Could be as simple as the fuel line is pinched. Or moving stuff around has clogged the fuel filter. The electrical connections to the injectors may be compromised. And so on.

Since you have a bit of time before you can work on the bike again, spend the time Studying (not just reading) the service manual, esp sec 4. That describes how to do a fuel pressure check, and has a good section on fuel injector troubleshooting and wiring. Also look at the section that describes what all of the pins on the ECM connect to. Pulling the black connector and confirming that pin 2 and pin 11 of the wiring harness side are properly grounded would be quick and simple. Do you have 12v to the grey wire at the injector connector with the IGN and Stop/Run switch on?

ECMspy is useful, but not a magic bullet. If the injector wiring is not in shape and correctly connected, ECMspy will only tell you they are not working, not what the problem is. As was mentioned in another thread, ECMspy is not a substitute for careful troubleshooting with the service manual and a multimeter. Just makes some of the steps easier.

The ECMspy version I have is V 1.12.1, and came free with the cable I got off of Ebay. You will need 'drivers' to make it work. I had an IT guy do that for me, as I am a computer idiot.

You could have a bad fuse, or a weak relay, or pinched wires from picking the bike up by the engine while doing test fits, ect, ect.

A long way of saying if the fuel pump and injectors worked before, they most likely work now, and the problem is in the wiring in between.

While I'm thinking about it, the wiring doesn't have to be 'smooshed flat' (that's a technical term) to be distressed. A tie-wrap that is too tight can do it.

My X-1 would lose turn signals, horn, ect on a random basis. One day I noticed the 'branch' of the harness that feeds the turn signal flasher and rear brake light had a sharpish 90deg bend where it was routed over the top of the oil tank. Re-routed the harness, and the problem went away.
