Is that a '98? I thought the '98 had a manta tank and the 2.5" pipes? Looks like the standard narrow tank and 2" pipes. I thought all 98's came with those changes?

98 S1W's were T-storm head, 2.5" collector, manta tank models.

98 regular S1's were Lightning head, 2" collector, narrow tank.

97 and prior were PM front calipers, 98's were Nissin. That one has a Nissin, so it's likely a 98.

So other than the Nissin brakes, the regular '98 S1's were no different than the earlier '96-97 models?

There are some other minor differences...frame colors, body materials (earlier S1s had fiberglass body panels, 98's were molded plastic), painted vs exposed CF rear fenders, different swingarm "axles"/adjusters, older pegasus logo went away in almost all places, turn signal flasher changed, different swingarm support bracket (the one that says BUELL over the front pulley), and I think the instrument panel bezels went from black to chrome. There's probably several other things that escape me at the moment, but I don't think any were very significant. The brakes are the biggest difference.

There was another difference unique to the 96 S1, which was the front motor mount.

Nissin caliper on the '98 also had a 1/2" master cylinder instead of the 5/8" like earlier models. ie: Stronger brakes.
