Over my time here, the single most said phrase is "for any intermittent tuning issue, suspect the head temp sensor before anything else". So I thought I'd give it a try and bought one, but my results were not as hoped - tuning is now very sputtery and the engine light pops on and off. At least now I know the head temp sensor is good, and this is just indicating I'm getting closer to the real problem here.

So I ask, after changing out the head temp sensor, what should I check out next? Cam position sensor? injector rebuild? O2 sensor?

as always, thanks.

What symptoms are you having, e.g., hard start when cold, sputter when warm, etc.? Did it happen all of a sudden? Better the info the better the advice.

It's throwing trouble codes, what are they?

My intermittent issues led to a carb conversion.

Mine, too. But I could've just replaced the cam position sensor.

it just runs bad everywhere now. prior to the new temp sensor it was just rough start. i'll get a chance to plug it into a computer tonight, maybe some megalog time. yesterday was the first time i've ridden it in a while and i took it on a short 4 mile round trip to the gas station - it seemed like it couldn't find stoich the whole way there, and on the way back the light would come on when i was stopped. i'll update when i know more

so some new stuff - the ecmspy report showed that my red light was my battery was too low - so i did some crawling around on the bike and found that the plug coming out of the stator was nearly undone, plugged it back in and it started running quite a bit better. but i noticed after a quick 10 minute ride that the voltage was still hanging around in the mid 11's at idle - is this typical battery behavior for a buell or should it always be above 12? for anyone still reading thanks for sticking around

Fully charge your battery. Then get it load tested at a better battery shop.

Also, check all grounds.

Then, do a TPS reset AFTER you idle it up to operating temp (about 10 minutes).

Back off your idle screw and make sure it's turned out far enough that the slide is at the bottom. Using ECMspy, reset the TPS.

After you've reset the TPS, let it idle for another 4 minutes. Then take it out and run it through the gears, up and down, for several miles, not allowing the RPM's to go above 4K. But don't lug it either.
