I installed a HID headlight kit on my 2002 X1W and when I turn the bike on, both headlights are on (I installed a dual headlight setup on the bike). Sometimes when I go to turn it off, the left side headlight is off (not all the time though). I just cycle the ignition off/on and it comes back on. I rechecked the wiring for loose wires and everything seems OK. Any idea what the problem may be (ballast?). Thanks in advance.

This sort of thing is mentioned a lot in the ulysses board.
Those ballasts need a strong source at startup.
Most run a wire directly from the battery and connect them through a relay so that you can start the engine without having them on.
Then when the engine is running, click them on.

Ya and what kind of ballasts do you have? Those HIDs aren't real reliable sometimes it's just a ballast that's why so many offer lifetime warrantys I went through 3 ballasts on my passenger side light on my jeep and only 1 on my drivers side my brother went through about 5 all together lol. After you wire it straight from battery if it still does that then replace ballast

The voltage drops when starting( that can shut it off, ) or you have an intermittent connection ( likely a ground ) mine goes out and comes back on at start,

BTW I have had some issues with the crummy weather proof connectors that power the ballasts check yours by wiggle testing it if you wiggle it and the lights go out play with bending the pins in the ballast connector to power wiring plug I twisted mine and bent the tips in just a bit...
all of that stuff is "CHEAP" and kinda shoddy..

If your budget is high I suggest going to BMW/Mercedes Benz and buy one of their HId ballasts and retro fitting it that is probably the most expensive road to go but there ballasts are top notch and hardly ever if ever fail. A friend of mine did that with his honda cbr

I'll recheck my wiring, if I remember well I powered and grounded the whole thing right on the battery.
Oldog, mine does the same as you, it comes on, then when I stop the bike, sometimes one of the lights will be off, I just cycle the ignition and it comes back on every time.

Your power is either cutting off all together or you have a voltage drop at some point

I still suggest the wiggle test at the ballast connector

Travis get the cheap crap vs paying a fortune for high end auto, I can buy a lot of 30$ ballasts for 200$ not to mention they probably come from the same place many times.

unless you KNOW you are getting Sylvainia / Osram items I would not waste the money..
