Sorry guys. I'm trying to connect to my X1, but failing miserably. I've downloaded the program from ecmspy, but when I open it, I get an error message:

'Failed to load FTD2XXL.DLL. Are the FTDI drivers installed?'

Based on some quick googling, I came across this link http://www.ftdichip.com/Drivers/CDM/CDM%202.04.16% 20WHQL%20Certified.zip and I've tried downloading all three of those, but it didn't change anything.

I'm running Windows 7 Ultimate, if that matters.

Please help... it's 70 degrees and sunny out there!!!

Did you download the "mono 2.1" from ecmspy's site?

I got the same error after purchasing the software (worked until I installed the license files). I could not get it resolved and ended up downloading the older free version and have not had any problems. Curious to see if you get it fixed...

Where would one find the 'older free version'? I just went to ecmspy.com and downloaded what they told me to, but it didn't cost me anything (yet).

The frustration is mounting. A few questions...

1. What EXACTLY do I need to download from ecmspy.com? I'm finding it to be confusing, and not user-friendly in the least.

2. Is there anyone in VA or northern NC that would be willing to lend a hand? I can throw the bike on a trailer and come to you.

Stuff like this makes me want to put my head through a brick wall and/or slap a carb on the bike.

Robert (in Greensboro, NC) here. I spent over a week trying to get mine to work. Turns out that the bike needs to be ready to start. The kickstand switch kept my spy from connecting with the ECU.

Try it with the bike running.

I find the 'executable' from the FTDI download page is a foolproof way of installing drivers.

ECMSpy shouldn't affect your drivers, they are there to tell the computer that the USB port is connected to an RS232 device.

For the ECM to be able to communicate, it needs to be powered, so that means ignition on and kill switch set to run. With the side stand switch and stuff, it should be OK as long as the bike is in neutral.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I downloaded a different version of ecmspy, and got a different error message, although I suspect it means the same thing:

'failed to get COM port'

Question: the ecm access thing is 4-pin. The end of my cable has 4 holes, but only 3 wires, one of the holes is blank. Is this normal? Or part of my problem...

Also, my kickstand switch is bypassed, and I've tried it in neutral, running, etc...

The 12V line from the ECM is not connected on the lead as it is not needed.

If the COM port allocated to the lead is high, maybe over 10 (I can't remember the limit), ECMSpy can't use it. Go into device manager and force it to a lower number. This may no longer be a restriction on Windows 7.

Did you use the executable from the FTDI site to apply your drivers? Is it an FTDI cable?

Correct, only 1 and 3 are showing.

'Did you use the executable from the FTDI site to apply your drivers? Is it an FTDI cable?'

What do you mean by FTDI cable? Forgive my computer ignorance. I got the cable with the bike... And which site are you referring to? Do you have a link?

So first of all, you need to ascertain which cable you have. I know of two types, the Prolific and the FTDI. When you plug the lead into a COM port that has never seen it before, it will identify the lead.

The FTDI drivers are here:

http://www.ftdichip.com/Drivers/VCP.htm

The executable is here:

http://www.ftdichip.com/Drivers/CDM/CDM20830_Setup .exe

If you look in 'Device Manager' on the computer, you will see under 'Ports (COM and LPT)' you will see if the lead has been identified and what the COM port is.

I am no computer expert either, so if you are not sure of the steps above, do a Google, there are people who can explain better than me...

A BIG thanks to all who replied, emailed, pm'd, and sent me cd's in the mail. I finally connected to the bike, but now I'm lost again... This is my second X1, both 99's, and it's like deja vu all over again. Ugh.

In the meantime, I bought a beater xb12s and fell in love with it. I love the styling of the tuber, but I can't get over how natural the xb feels to me. Looks like the X1 is going up for sale. :/
