I have a 97 S1 Lightning and the rear shock is completely worn out, bounces going down the road and its adjusted all the way to the stiffest setting. i see a lot of new shock prices that i cant afford but also see a lot of posts saying rebuilding the stock shock is a waste of money. i have found a Race Tech rebuild kit for about 30 and a local shop guy says he will rebuild it for 90. my question is, is it worth it even at that price or should keep riding the bouncing bike (lol) and save up for a new one?

Do you weigh more or less than 170lbs?
Chances are you may need a spring for your weight and a Gold Valve to match. A few extra dollars there.

You will be happy with a rebuild for a few thousand miles but then one day it will become become clear that you need to do it again. The seals are the weak point in the OEM shock, it is a poor design.

i weigh about 220. do you think it would still wear out that fast with race tech seals?

first off which shock do you have? if you have a pre-recall WP or last recall short showa, both are worth **sending** to racetech for a rebuild. if you have the long showa, and are cheap, keep your eyes on ebay and the classifieds for a short showa and associated mount or the old WP and send either off. if you can spare about $900 for a penske or works, those are nice too.

We can get you the Twin Motorcycles variant if you decide to go that route. It's a really nice piece.
