First post here gents, Just purchased a 2002 Cyclone. Rode it home today and noticed this.


Looks to be sheared off, its connected to the airbox. Can anyone tell me what this is and how important it is, and how i can fix it.

Crankcase breather bolt. Should be an identical one on the front head. Remove remaining piece with proper sized screw extractor and replace. Good Luck.

Can it be ridden like this?

Also I just noticed some very faint ticking noise from the primary, Is this normal for a Buell? Or is something wrong? There is 4300 miles on the bike.

It can be ridden if you don't mind it blowing oil all over your right knee and the side of the bike.

I would recommend against it myself. Really should not be too tough to get out with a reverse fluted extractor as Oc mentioned.

Get someone familiar with Harley motors that you know to have a listen to your engine and primary. These are noisy machines and cause a lot of undue angst with new owners not accustomed to them. That being said, you may have a primary chain that needs adjustment, you may be low on primary fluid, or your tick may not be coming from the primary at all, could be an exhaust leak, lifter, or any number of things. Then again as I said, it could be nothing at all. Do you have a service manual?

after breaking one I pitched the other one. I got some 1/2" bolts at the hardware store and drilled thru them. Tapped the hex end with 1/8" NPT and made something I can depend on. Cost about twelve bucks. Good luck

While it can be ridden, that breather bolt also is part of the carb support so you may end up with intake leaks. You would be better off to fix it.

The good news is that the bolt already has a hole through it and that will cut the removal time. If you get a good fluted style thread extractor, it should come out without too much trouble. I would avoid the tapered el-cheapo extractors in this situation.

The horseshoe style breather kits bypass the airbox and come with new banjo bolts if you go that route. I used this style breather system on both of my bikes until I converted to XB rocker covers at which point I ran solid bolts for my carb supports. There is more stress at this location than one might think. I have even seen the carb supports break from vibration, especially the chrome ones.

Hey thanks guys, I am going to replace that bolt. Just need to find one that's not $20.

On another note, after searching through these forums, I took a look at the primary chain, to see if that is whats causing the noise. turns out there is about an inch of play in the chain. I will have to tackle that another day, as today was 68 and sunny. Rode my triumph all afternoon, not the Buell. Ill get in there good tomorrow and change the primary fluid, and oil. But ill leave with this picture of the beast. Fresh from paint.

I too have an OEM from a 2000 M2, just pay for the shipping and its yours. I have one of those horseshoe breather kits and it cleans upp the area nice they are not expensive at all.

Well I tightened up the primary chain, and changed the Primary oil. No more clunking sound, but there still is a slight sound. And let me tell you what a pain it was to get that exhaust on and off, took about three hours. At lest it's done, next time ill just stick some foil in there. Just need the bolt and some good weather now! I hope...

M2marc, thank you very much for the bolt, have been out of town for a bit and just now got to replacing it. It went on with out a single problem, the bolt actually came out by hand, and the new one went in just as easy.
