Hello everybody,

Some time ago, when I was driving my Buell, my speedo suddenly stopped working!
The pointer just dropped to zero, and has never moved again since! The ODO counter is also not counting anymore.
I tried to replace the speed pick-up, but that didn't work.

Now, I have a feeling that the meter itself is maybe busted, so does anybody have any useable tips for me to verify if the meter is broken, or that it is maybe just some wiring?

Looking forward to some replies!

Greetings from the Netherlands!

Check if all your other electrical stuff is working. I had that happen one time and it was, if I remember well, the accessory fuse, I had a few other electrical things including the speedo not working.

Thanks for your reply!
As far as I could see, the rest of the electrics are working (back lighting of the speedo and rpm gauge are still working, as well as all the other lights and indicators)
I used a multimeter to check the continuity of the leads between the sensor and the speedo, but I am not sure which wires to check... Or what to expect when measuring...

I'll check my service manual this afternoon (mine is a 2002) and see what the speedo testing procedure looks like.

couldn`t they help you on the dutch forum

check the fuses (i had exact the same problem with my 2000 x1 rs)

if the fuse keeps blowing: check the wiring from headlight first.

Do a search on this site for speedo issue's. this thread has come up before with some really good advice.
It really sounds like the pick-up went bad. Was the replacement pick-up the right part number? I'v seen new replacement parts bad right out of the box. If possible id try a known good pick-up. thats the easiest one to rule out.
get your hands on a service manual and check the wiring diagram.
short version- White goes to speedo, black goes to "data link connector", red is power.
could be wrong, i suck at reading wiring diagrams, but that should get you close.
I had the exact same problem with my 00 X1 and it was the pick-up.

My vote also goes towards a bad speed sensor. From my '01 X-1 service manual:

The speedometer is not repairable. First check for loose connectors, ect. Confirm the speed sensor is good. Finally, a dealer will/should have a Speedometer Tester (P/N HD-41354) that can check the integrity of the speedo itself.

Hope this helps, Dave

I found out that this bulb works great for a 2001 Buell X1 Lightning speedometer. Now if I can just find the mating Tachometer bulb, it is much smaller.
