My mechanic has top end of the engine off changing the head gaskets & tells me the cylinder walls are looking black & he'd like to change the rings while he's in there.
My question: this is a stock motor. Is there any aftermarket rings that are better than stock HD's? If so, how are they better?

Thanks...

Sorry to snowball your project, but the mechanic should check the cylinder bore for roundness and determine whether a re-bore with 5 thou over pistons would be desirable.
Can't help you on the rings question.

Further snowballing:
If the heads are off, the jugs are now loose on the crankcase. The cylinder base gaskets have to be replaced too.

HD rings are ok when installed properly

Nate, already thought of that, it's a '99 so if the base gaskets are the original paper I'd want them changed too.

Jim, please explain, I'm not knowledgeable enough mechanically to know if he wrong...

If he was a MECHANIC he would have pulled the WRIST PINS and left the PISTONS in the
CYLINDERS(not disturbing the RINGS !!!)} and replaced the BASE GASKETS !!!

Bbob

HD rings if placed in jugs that are not to big / out of round | spec should be fine
check the end gaps and install per instruction in honed jugs all will be well.
