My mechanic has top end of the engine off changing the head gaskets & tells me the cylinder walls are looking black & he'd like to change the rings while he's in there. My question: this is a stock motor. Is there any aftermarket rings that are better than stock HD's? If so, how are they better? Thanks... | ||

Sorry to snowball your project, but the mechanic should check the cylinder bore for roundness and determine whether a re-bore with 5 thou over pistons would be desirable. Can't help you on the rings question. | ||

Further snowballing: If the heads are off, the jugs are now loose on the crankcase. The cylinder base gaskets have to be replaced too. | ||

Nate, already thought of that, it's a '99 so if the base gaskets are the original paper I'd want them changed too. Jim, please explain, I'm not knowledgeable enough mechanically to know if he wrong... | ||

If he was a MECHANIC he would have pulled the WRIST PINS and left the PISTONS in the CYLINDERS(not disturbing the RINGS !!!)} and replaced the BASE GASKETS !!! | ||

Bbob HD rings if placed in jugs that are not to big / out of round | spec should be fine check the end gaps and install per instruction in honed jugs all will be well. |
