Just got notice that the prices went up on Works shocks on 9/1, and adjustable preload only shocks jumped from $699 to $799, and Fully Adjustable jumped from $905 to $1039. There are a few of the preload only shocks at the distributor (blue spring, sprung for 175-225 lb rider) in both 16.5" and 14.7" that would still sell for the $699 price, but they won't last long. IF you were thinking about getting one of these shocks, act now or pay more later. My site now reflects the new pricing, but if I get an order in the next couple days and the distributor shocks are still available, I'll honor the old price. Ping me if any questions, see http://www.americansportbike.com/shoponline/ccp0-p rodshow/6060.html

Got one in may of this year, totally worth it, even if the price went up $100, way lighter and cleaner looking than the P.O.S. Showa that I took off my X1 and better shock absorption as well, looks way better, and the bike feels glued to the ground now. All in all, great investment, better than wasting another $499 on a Showa that's gonna crap in 1000 miles or a rebuild on the Showa that will also last 1000 miles. Trust me, you won't be disappointed.

Josh

P.S. I got a Showa in case anyone wants it for a rebuild, 16.5 inch.

For that price you can get the Penske and way more tuning options. Works isn't going to help their sales by upping the price that much! Get it now while you still can!

How long ago did you buy your Penske? You say you can get a fully adjustable one for $699.00?

I did the research, Penske wanted $1500 for an adjustable, and $1000 for a pre-load, then I talked to the guys at works and we made a deal. I paid $699 and got a shock that was tuned to my weight and I have to say, they nailed it. I'm not sure if the Penske would've been worth the extra $ but I am satisfied with what I got from WP, and would definitely recommend them.

I already have a WP fully adjustable shock and i got it at cost because my stock one pissed all over JTSperformance shop floor. And terry was nice enough to get it for me at cost and have it drop shipped to my door! It is a great shock and i had it tuned by corporate suspension. http://www.corporatesuspension.com/

I am still trying to save the money for a steering damper for my ZX10R $450.00-650.00 wow they are pricey.

Josh,
Not sure where you got those prices on the Penske, but a tuber Penske fully adjustable 83 series is $935, and a dual rate fully adjustable 87 series is $1270 (see http://www.americansportbike.com/shoponline/ccp0-p rodshow/5194-83.html)

Until recently, $699 got you a preload only adjustable WORKS Performance shock. It just jumped to $799 for that same shock. It isn't a WP, which is White Power, the original pre-99 shock manufacturer before the recalls changed them to Showas.

Works makes a fine shock, and theirs is the only one that has a true compression reservoir (that is, the fluid flows TO the remote reservoir on a wheel rise event) because they take their line off the back of the shock. The fixed damping Works shock for $699 was a reasonable deal, at $799 it's a harder sell.

But with the new price for the Works fully adjustable, which does NOT include ride height adjustment independent of preload, the Penske is a lot more compelling.

I was referring to WP as in Works Performance, and $935 sounds like $1000 to me when you add up the shipping costs. Like I said $699 and free shipping for the Works. I didn't get the Penske for the same reason I didn't get a U-Haul shock.(j/k). Couldn't pull the trigger on a Penske when the Works shock had as good of reviews. I love the shock I got now, tuned to my weight and feels very solid. Another thing that was difficult was finding where to get a Penske, this was before I was turned on to BWB.

I agree though, if the Works shock was $799 when I was looking for one, might have been harder for me to pull the trig. This was all before I joined BWB so it was kinda hard to find where to get a Penske.

If I'm almost always riding two-up with a combined weight of, say, 350 lbs (to be discreet), would you agree that the ones mentioned in stock at the lower price would not be the way to go?

If you get a hold of works and tell them you ride 2 up most of the time and your combined weight of 350, they can build you a shock, if it is too stiff or too loose, they can readjust it for you until you are satisfied. You have up to 30 days to return it for readjusting, it comes with a lifetime warranty, well worth it.

yes, at 350 lbs, the shocks at the distributor would be horribly undersprung.

They could build a shock that would work, but it would be at the newer higher pricing. Those prices went into effect on 9/1.

Yeah but at those prices it might actually be cheaper to buy a different bike for 2 up riding.LOL

Thanks for the input, Josh and Al. We are currently subjecting a nice original shock to our fat asses so a better sprung one is on the need-to-buy-someday-soon list. But thanks for confirming that its better to pay full retail for the right one than to scrimp $100 and still not be right.

And yes, Josh, that too. We just bought a 2002 Duc ST4s for stupid cheap. It'll be the long distance ride and the Buell for local days and weekends.

Al-

With either the Works or Penske shocks, can you adjust ride height with these as in lowering the bike? Or is see its a 16.5" and 14.7"... If i use a a 14" front mount with the a 16.5 shock, that should lower the bike...correct?

1) Penske is ride height adjustable independent of preload..Works is NOT.

2) Leverage ratio on the swingarm is approximately 2:1, not exactly. Putting a 14.7 front mount on a 16.5" shock will raise the rear wheel by about 3.6", BEFORE the suspension even starts moving. You'll crash the tire into all kinds of things. So no, you can NOT use the wrong mount with the wrong shock.

IIRC there isn't much height adjustment with the Penske maybe 1/2 inch or so.

There's a bit more adjustment than 1/2" on the shock itself, which then equates to about an inch of actual rear ride height.
If you're using it to adjust the height of your bike because of foot reach the ground, that may not seem like much. But if that's why you're looking for ride height adjustment, you're missing the point.

1" of ride height with regard to suspension tuning is a HUGE amount of movement. 1/4" of height adjustment made a tremendous difference on how well my S1W would hook up and wheelie or not, and how well it corners.

Ok- thanks for the info.. Ill have to start experimenting a little. Thinking of swapping my standard XB front forks on my conversion to SCG... so ill be looking to lower the rear a little more. Once I calculate the distance needed ill just machine a new front mount to what i need
