Hello all-

I've decided to help my little brother attack all of his bike issues. We installed new intake gaskets last night, which allowed it to get back to running normal. Also had his Force pipe ceramic coated and installed new exhaust gaskets. The only other mods to the bike are Forcewinder intake and a race ecm.

The bike has never run great. It makes good power, but pops a bunch at a steady cruise, and the AFV always resets to around 125%.

Whee's the best starting point for getting proper fueling? I am not convinced that the previous owner didn't mess with the maps....so that may be the best place to start-getting stock race maps on there.

I've never successfully datalogged. But if we go that route, I'd love to have a map that is a much better starting place than where we are at!

What say you?

Andy,it is the Force pipe--it is too open . X-1 has a tiny "Learned Fuel" area so you could go in and add fuel to that area, try five points at a time and see.Leave the other areas alone for now.

I agree about it being too open...but it's got to be able to run better than it is now!

What area of the maps is that?

If you are looking at ECM-Spy it is small area that gets highlighted when you put a check mark in the LCL box down at bottom.Think it might be in red??? And it is at about 16-31% throttle and 1900-4000, really small area on an X-1.
The problem being is this is the area the ECM looks at to "learn" from the O2 sensor in rear cylinder. And then it applies this to the ENTIRE map. So if you have a lean spot here--and you do as it adds 25% more fuel---that means it is now 25% richer everywhere and obviously your bike is not happy with this.

Great, thanks for the insight. I have also been discussing with Mike a bit...and he basically said the same thing in different terms. We talked about resetting the AFV, cruising a bit at 2000 RPM, check AFV. Reset AFV, 300 RPM etc....with the hope of finding an area of the map that is doing what you are explaining. I'll get to work....thans again!

Andy,
Jim nailed it. I'll bet if he looked he could find some old dyno plots with the A/F chart.. I remember seeing them from Aaron way back in the day. Completely forgot about the Force pipe thing...
If you have the race header or the stock header with a V&H the race ECM can handle it.

"Think it might be in red???"

Exactly. And it is almost right in the middle of the fuel map. I would also suggest to "enable" the Open Loop Learn function in the Other Maps (IIRC) page.

So I did a bit of experimenting today, based on Jim's recommendation. I reset AFV to 100% and I added 5 points to the area that gets highlighted, and added a couple of points to the surrounding cells. Took it for a cruise, and 122% AFV (5 points = about 4% increase, so just about right).

So, knowing that are is so lean....I obviously can't just add another 22% to JUST those cells! What's the best way to attack this? Is there an existing map that I can start with that might be much closer than the race map?

Here's the current maps (after I added in the LCL srea)...are they even in the ballpark of being worth staring from? I have a feeling the previous owner messed with it some. There are a few things that seem odd to me...

If you check the CL box (below the LCL) the areas will be shown on the maps - blue for CL and red for LCL. That way you'll be able to see the exact areas. That aside, I did a visual comparison (sorry still don't know how to post a picture) and your maps are not that far off from Race and close to what I run with a V&H and Forcewinder. My AFV is 104.
Given that Force exhaust is more free flowing than V&H, you may want to add a little more fuel and see if you can at least bring the AFV down to the 110-115 range.

if you change the values in the lcl zone and shoot for a 97-103 afv, the ecu will apply this afv value to the entire fuel map, and your afr at wot will go lean. if you have the race ecm load in a stock race map and toggle on the open loop learn. this lets the o2 talk to the ecm on a real time basis and adjusts the afr to similuate the afr graph in the tunning guide.

Thanks for the input. I got it running better than it has in the 3 years I have owned it- crisp off of idle, cruising RPM is smooth and steady, and tons of power. I know it's not perfect, and I hope to find a local shop with a dyno that can work with it....but it's running great for now thanks to the help given here and from Mike.
