Should a TPS reset be done on occasion as "preventative maintanence"? How much does an HD dealer charge on average? I have an 00' X1 with the race ecm. Rides great just has a long start and idles under 1k rpms (maybe this is normal?)

I wouldn't hurt anything if done properly (set TPS while engine >160c) Should be idling about 1050, easily adjusted while warmed up with the adjustment knob. Too low idle rpm is not advised on sporty motors, but shouldn't be a problem if close to 1000 rpm.

It used to be a part of the 10K mile service.
I wouldn't bother doing it more often than that.
They don't seem to drift unless they are about to crap out.

Beats me how much a dealer charges. Last time I had a dealer do my X1, they didn't charge me for it. When you have a tech that knows what he's doing, it's a 12 minute thing.
The only caveat: make sure it's done with the engine at operating temp.

What is the logic behind doing it at operating temps? Does it change how the butterfly seats itself or something?

I don't mean to question the method, because that's how I did it myself, but I do wonder WHY it's any different at operating temperatures.

I have seen this mentioned before and have the same question. Theoretically it should not matter and I have done it both ways. The only difference is that you can set your "warm" idle more accurately if done at operating temperature. But the downside is that your cold start idle might be too low for a steady idle.

The TPS is a potentiometer, a variable resistance. as things change temperatures, they change resistances according to a temperature coeficient.
It makes a bit of difference.
One other thing, some here have noticed a small deposit in the throttle body near where the butterfly comes close. Some have found that this tiny layer of "stuff" can interfere with closing it all the way during the TPS reset.

The 1999/2000 S3/S3T FACTORY SERVICE MANUAL states the RESET SPECIFICATIONS are:

0.5 - 1.5 VOLTS (closed throttle)

3.9 - 4.9 VOLTS at wide open throttle
