After riding to work this morning in a 35 degree wind, my fingers are forcing me to think about heated grips.

The Polly heaters which lots of people seem to recommend pull a combined 36 watts. Will that cause any problem with a 2000 X1's charging system?

I'm just wary because I've looked into it on smaller bikes and decided against it every time because I don't want to kill the battery.

I've got them and love them. I got mine from Al several years ago. Got to get a new ceramic doo-hicky as I've busted mine. And yes, doo-hickey is the technical term. Just ask my wife.

BTW get the three way switch, off, high, and low because on high they'll roast you sometimes.

36 watts / 12 volts = 3 amps. Not exactly a huge load. No worries. Your headlight, at 60 watts, is pulling 5 amps on a 10amp fuse, so with the added 3 watts you would still be right there at the 80% load mark, which is as high as you want to go on a fuse. In any case, just be sure you hook them up so they don't stay on when the bike is off (like the headlight circuit per above, as opposed to a direct connection to the battery). With a direct connection, you can pretty well guarantee that one day, you will forget to turn them off, and your battery will be drained.

Or you can hook them up through two relays (for high and low), which is a bit of a pain with the high/low settings, but it will give you the option to use a smaller switch if you don't want to mount the one that came with the kit. PM me if you want a relay wiring diagram for the relays, as Andy Nelson gave me one.

Get the motorcycle heaters, not the ones for snowmobiling which are too hot.

Do the search for polly heaters, and do the search also for heated grips. Huge vats of info here on all of the above.

If you are going to tap into the headlight wire, I highly recommend using a Posi-tap, which taps into the wire with a pinprick through the insulation, rather than severing the original wire and splicing:

Have the Polly Heaters on the M2. Had them on the Uly as well.

No issues and don't really draw any more power than other kits, but work WAY better.
