I see lots of folks powder coating frames. What are you doing with the frame stickers? Cover them? Peel them off? | ||

They're easy to peel off. The disappointing part is that you can't buy new VIN stickers to put on. I guess I can understand their point, can't be making duplicate stickers to put on stolen frames. Still, it would be a nice touch on a resto. Maybe someone ended up with some during the shutdown they could share.... The guy that sandblasted my frame obliterated the first few digits on mine. Do what you can to keep them under control. Masking the sticker is not an option as the glue would run while being baked in the oven. | ||

That's my point. I think the VIN is stamped into the frame as well as the sticker, isn't it? | ||

i didnt know there was a vin sticker, mines just stamped onto the neck. | ||

Yep. Has the manufacture certificate information as well. If I decide to so a full frame up restoration (envious after seeing 'Nutz' ride), I hate to lose it. | ||

I would peel it off (trying not to damage it)and take it to a store that does custom stickers and have the glue re-built on the original sticker. When i was playing with the windscreen and the painting of it. I had a shop here re-do the glue on the windscreen sticker so i could re-apply it after i sprayed it black. It looked great and worked very well and they charged my like $2.50 to do the work. | ||

I know it's silly, but to me the stickers are part of what makes the bike "original". | ||

Yes, if the bike is kept all original I would like to have them on. I have seen very few that are. | ||

Big decision. My advice would be get two bikes. One to make original and one to make functional to your needs. It is very hard to keep something like a Buell stock. Y Mount, exhaust, Penske shock, tires, rims, cams, seat, heads etc etc and the list goes on. I made my S2T the way I wanted it for the purpose I use it for and tried to keep it somewhat stock looking... A sticker is a small thing but if I did not need to remove it I would not. (of course I have two S2Ts one stock, one not....) Good luck | ||

For the money it would take to make this M2 what I "want", I could have another bike. If I redid this bike, I would just pull it apart and have it painted/powder coated, cleaned, and reassembled. | ||

I know the feeling, i'm torn between leaving the S1W as stock as possible or going full upgrade. I'd really love to leave it as original as possible and find another tuber, one that is possibly neglected and needing some love, to 're-do'.... i'm with ya on the stickers | ||

FT_ Bumpus parts cant source one? I would have a duplicate made the X1 numbers are on the steering head behind the head light. Some times bikes are not about rational choices but passion, that M2 weather customized or painstakingly restored is one of a shrinking number of unique bikes so whats wrong with his and hers m2's ? so far almost every thing done to the X1 is "reversible" and I keep the parts .. | ||

If I were going to put in the work to customize a bike, I would start with a less "loved". Then again, you hate to think about altering one that is in good shape. I'd like to repaint the frame/plastics. I'd like to repaint the wheels. I'd like to clean everything up. I don't like the bread box, so I'd like an oval race can. Beyond that, I'd like to keep it stock. Then I'd like an X1. I wouldn't mind an S1. Maybe an S3. Oh, no. I may have the tuber bug. CRAP! | ||

I believe the 12 step program Frank refers to is you buy 12 different tubers. | ||

Unfortunately, Cornel has so many that he hasn't had to do routine maintenance on any of them. I had to show him where the primary fluid goes.  He has to ride 225,000 miles just to get all of his bikes to a 5000 mile interval. I'm glad he has moved near me. I enjoy riding with him. I did get to introduce him to his first water crossing! |
