So ive got an X1 that doesnt get used because its been replaced by the 1125r for blasting the corners. I think the X1 could keep its place in my garage if it could become somewhat of a touring machine. Sure I could just get a S3T or I have been looking at BMW but I already own the X1 and think it could be a cool sport tourer. Any helpful ideas?

soft bags, perhaps a set of blast bars.
and a select seat or the like, works good

what about some kind of wind protection. Anyone used any kind of universal fairing or fit a fairing from a different bike?

The concept isn't that far off from what some have done to tour on an xb, so you may want to do some searching beyond the tuber section. A tank bag, saddlebags and a top bag, and you will be pretty well loaded. It would be a lot easier to go windscreen rather than try to find a fairing.
Here's one company (Madstad) that makes an adjustable windscreen; the only one they make specially for Buells is for the Uly, but they also have this universal one:

The badwebber I bought my Ss from bought a Madstad for his Uly, and he liked it a lot.

Givi makes universal screens for naked bikes. The A760 looks to be discontinued, but I don't know which other one might be best for an X1 - maybe the A770?

just let it get the feeling back LOL

it was not that bad I did just south of Cinci to Leland 1 day about 700 miles

not bad for an ol gray back on a SE-X1

the 1125r has much better suspension, but the ergos are very sporting and tough on old legs/knees at the end of the day.

why not an 1125r faring with a ZG double bubble windshield?

I do love the overall just silky smooth suspension on the 1125r but I just cant go the distance on it. Im thinking the X1 with some suspension upgrades and some wind protection just might be the ticket.

I did homecoming last year from oklahoma city on my '02 X1.

IMO, the stock bars match the lack of wind protection when you're at highway speed. The wind in your chest lifts weight off your wrists. The Pro series seat (the kind with the piping) is a bit more comfortable than the factory original, due to the difference in shape more than any small difference in padding.

Throw on some soft bags then drink a couple cans of harden the f*%k up and you're good to go!

S3/Blast bars, better padded seat (don't think it the pro but could be), Soft bags.

After spending some time on the wife's Blast the X1 windscreen Blocks A LOT of air comparatively. : D

chipper6 how do you like taking trips on the X1...is that setup a pretty comfortable ride? What suspension do you have on that....all stock or what?

Scott getting on and off can be a challenge for an ol git like me, the tank bag makes it more of a slot, I use a duffel I got a wally world for the top same soft bags as chipper, and a modded back pak for the tank bag ( might be why? )
to be honest the worst thing after 700 miles is usualy my knees, followed by my butt.

oh and I am bushed, hello Im 52..

the suspension on my X1 is hard and unpleasant compared to the 1125, yeah if you can up grade do so

a can of htfu gotta remember that.......

Having done some 3k+m rides, folks here have pretty much covered what I did. S3T bars, soft luggage, and start doing stretching exercises 3-4wks before the trip starts. Chipper6 has what I ended up doing.

Perhaps something like an Airhawk seat pad can be worthwhile. And as to wind protection, I would add XB handguards, like from the TT. Does wonders in the rain. The flyscreen works well enough, for me.

I used to travel on my X1. 1+ on what Oldog said upgrade suspension for better ride.
I would love to ride it to the vintage days in Ohio one year, even though it's not vintage, it would be fun.

Old Dog is the man! I agree the knees would be dead riding +2k on an 1125R, it is like riding on a surfboard vs the X-1.
Hauling your gear and booty on a backpack isn't the way to go. The jet pack look amused more than one onlooker on the way back to Indiana...

dude that jet pack is da bomb I needed that in Chicago to rocket over the trucks!

I did Wilmington to Jaxonville FL ( about 400 miles with a pack ) dude you have a constitutuon of steel to carry a full pack like that on your back. Of course having to transport a race header home had to be interesting, it was great good fun at home comming! knees and to a lesser extent hands / shoulders are much better.

PK did you do Willimena state park while in AR? I worked in Mena for a couple of weeks on a project the drive up to the lodge was great even in a car,

Oldog, I haven't been to Willimena state park yet. Heard a lot of good things about it though from other riders. Apparently it's a popular destination for those from central Oklahoma.

Those pictures are from my trip last year to homecoming and back. I didn't schedule the trip to allow for much more than a direct route but ended up going out of my way into Eureka Springs, Arkansas and riding 62 west from there. The midwest may lack appeal when compared to some of the riding on the coasts or mountain ranges, but traveling WI -> IA -> MO -> AR -> OK within a couple days time really gave me a renewed appreciation of the beauty that the region has to offer. I hadn't been satisfied with Oklahoma since moving here in late 2008, but that trip showed me that the state has a beauty of it's own to offer even if it doesn't have the curves and terrain that we all love to ride.

Everyone should be lucky enough to experience this country from the inside of a motorcycle helmet.

Soft bags? The Buell units, no, but the Cortech and Tourmaster are adjustable to fit any application.

Did you buy a set to go on your 1125?

I've done several 1000 mile days on a 2001 X1, one time while carrying a 6 person tent and a couple of folding chairs.

The Ventura Pack is a great solution if you have the stock read fender. You can carry a ton of stuff and it easy to forget it is there.

I have an undertail from American sport bike so I switched to the cortech bags, they work fine as FT Bastard indicates.
