here I am again with my problem on the S1. the paint on the tank started to bubble again in proximity of the fuel filler cap. now I'm trying to figure out why when I bought the bike and it had a custom paint job, it was perfect with no bubbles at all and when I repainted the bike, I started to have these problems (this is the 4th time I paint the bike). now my guess is: would it be the seal in the fuel filler cap? or do you think if I purchase a brand new tank, I would eliminate the problem? the tank starts to be 12-14 years old... |

Prep was wrong. I forget what the right process is...but I think it's here on Badweb somewhere. The tank material does NOT get a "normal" prep job, for exactly this reason. |

The prep uses a specific undercoat and paints that do not create a sealed coating over the tank. That is, they breathe. I know it's in the KV somewhere, along with the specific paint/underbody primer specs. Taking time to prep very carefully was the key. |

dug up from the kv Here is the skinny from Al at American Sport Bike. >>This info came directly from the good folks at Buell that were kind enough >>to forward it to me when I'd asked about how to prevent paint bubbling on >>Buell Tube frame tank repaints. This is what they use to paint the tanks >>originally, and Buell hasn't had a problem with PAINT bubbling, only decal >>bubbling. They won't warranty that if you follow the info contained >>herein that you won't have paint bubbling, but I'm guessing you won't have >>a problem if you follow it. >>>>Al>>>>>>> I hope the Info. send helps, if not drop me a e-mail. I will get some >>>more info. >>>Details for the following: >>> PPG primer we use >>>Primer is K36 PPG >>>Hardener is K201 PPG >>>Reducer can be any of the following >>>DT-895 >>>DT-885 >>>>>> PPG base coat types we use >>>The Base coat is Deltron 2000 which is DBC >>>>>> PPG clear coat we use >>>DCU2042 PPG is speed clear >>>Hardener is DCX9 PPG >>>Reducer can be any of the following >>>DT-895 >>>DT-885 |

Edoardo, did you put hylomar sealant around the tank filler opening, under the ring? |

Does this mean we shouldn't wax these tanks? |
