Looking to replace my tail light assembly, one of the screws is stripped. Anyone have any ideas on a fix for that screw hole?? I was thinking possibly a silcone caulk. It'll hold the screw in place and wont vibrate out. The other screw is just fine this far.

happened to mine too, I tried a few things but ultimately a replacement unit was pretty reasonable (a few years ago anyways).

RatBuell said that he just drilled a hole all the way through the back plate and replaced the screw with a longer bolt with a nut on the back side.

With the lens removed mix some JB weld, coat the screw and run it in the stripped hole and let sit until cured then back the screw out and reinstall lens.

Only problem with JB is that it tends to lock to the screw, preventing future bulb replacement.

Yes, I did get some long screws that would go all the way through the tail section. Drilled the tail section where the backing plate holes meet, ran the screws through and used a washer and nylock to hold in place. DO NOT OVERTIGHTEN, you'll crack the lens. And, I'm not worried about bulb replacement because I put the LED board out of a Uly taillight in there - no more bulbs : )

cut a piece of safety wire or a strand of copper wire and put in the screw hole.

Insert screws and tighten normally.

done.

Don't know if this will help you, but....\

I have a 99 S3T and being an old Moto Guzzisti, I noticed that my tail light looked just like the CEV unit Moto Guzzi used on the Mille GT/ Spada/ T-5 models all through the late 80s to mid 90s.

I checked my Guzzi parts manuels and the part numbers are different, but they sure look identical, so much that I'm about to buy a spare assy from Guzzi for the day that UV damage destroys my stock unit.

Want to thank you all for the great responses.....headed out to try the copper wire in the stripped hole. Thanks again!

And yes, I believe the S2/S3 use a Guzzi taillight assembly.

leave enough wire to bend it where it comes out of the hole.

this way it does not get packed down to the bottom when the screw is inserted.

the idea is to take up some space so the the screw engages what is left of the existing threads (or cuts them a little deeper).
