I love my new M2 but it seems to cruise in 5th going 70mph at over 3k RPM....what did you guys do to lower the RPMs without spending a bundle on a 6 speed conversion?

I dont worry about it, its fine cruising at that rpm

done whole days on the highway without issues doing 80+

My M2 (2000) seems happiest when above about 2800 rpm. At about 70 mph (110 km/hr) it just purrs along. No strain on the engine at all and you certainly don't want to lug the engine.

You can buy just a 28 tooth front sprocket, 1 tooth bigger than stock.
(Or 29T, or even 30T, but might start to feel it on the other end.)
I had a chart somewhere that showed the rpm reduction at various speeds, can't find it at the moment.

BUELLers:

You can also install a XB12 motor sprocket and primary chain which will also decrease your INTERSTATE RPM ...

Did this on my BLAST !!!

the old tuber motors are not not happy unless they are running three thousand rpm or higher! Mine gets 60-63 mpg at that speed.

About how fast are you going in 1st gear if you hold 3000 rpm?

How fast in 2nd at 3000?

How fast in 3rd at 3000?

I don't have a tach and I'm curious.

The front sprocket is also available from vendors, in both steel and aluminum, in a tooth range of maybe one down and 2 or 3 up.
I researched this so long ago, it's not on my computer anymore. With a combination of primary, and secondary changes, one can dial in pretty much any rpm you want at a given speed.
And then there's another option, the SportTwin setup. See the Buell section at: twistgear.net Otherwise known as Johnson Engineering out of Iowa. So many choices!

I keep mine between 3200 to 3500 on the freeway, btw.

Must get a new PRIMARY CHAIN PN 40147-04 due to the increase of 3 teeth ...

The TUBE FRAME's, BLAST, and XB9 are 35T ...

3K is right smack in the middle of the power band for the stock M2. With Andrews N8 cams, my M2 doesn't even start to turn on until 3-4K. Don't sweat it. You're right where you want to be.

Before I had the M2 I was riding an '04 Sportster. The two bikes have a lot in common however displayed totally different personalities. The Sportster was quite happy to run like a tractor and chug along. The M2 however is not very happy at very low rpm and I must feather the clutch at times (in town at very slow speeds, u-turns, etc.) that I did not need to with the sportster.

I like the M2's lighter fly wheel and more willingness to rev, as compared to the Sportster. I would be concerned that lowering the revs at highway speeds would make it quite unhappy around town. The change did take a little getting used to.

If you were doing all highway work perhaps a change may be in order but you still need to run her in the power band. My old Triumph Bonnieville is much happier to rev than my M2 and it cruises @ 4000 rpm @ 60 mph. It doesn't have the torque of the M2 so rpm is even more important.

Let us know what you decide and how it works for you because we are all still learning.

Please let us know what you find out about changing gearing. I want to lower my gearing for more pep in the hills. I never run the thing over around 75 mph so I'm willing to give up lots of top end.

Blazing_saddle, in your case, it seems the cheapest/simplest thing to try would be change the front pulley to a 26T.
You can find them often on ebay, or find them anytime at full retail,about $135.

I switched to the 26 tooth about 4 years ago. I run my bike consistantly on the highwayin 4th gear and it loves to be right around 4,000 - 4,500. I only use 5th gear if I am going to cruise above 70 mph. My motor is completely stock with a force intake and WileyCo. exhaust.

The 26 tooth made the bike much nicer for popping around town riding two up. No more chugging in 25 mph zones in 2nd gear. I noticed a little more pick-up due to the smaller sprocket, but nothing huge. I have also done trackdays with this set up at Blackhawk farms (smaller track) and found myself around 110 mph in the straights which was just about topped out. I never need that speed on the street.

Sounds like the improvement I'm after. Any issues with turning the belt around a smaller radius? That's the only reservation I have with a smaller front.

I have not had any issues with the belt. It is also worth noting that there is enough adjustment in the swingarm to accomidate the smaller front sprocket.

Are you wanting to run 90+ all day? I buzz around a 4k all day long on the freeway. Just remember that you're going to sacrifice some low end grunt if you swap pulleys.
