So I decided to take the S1W to work today, I usually take the 1125CR because there are some things I need to take care of on the S1W…fix the exhaust, check the isos, figure out why none of the indicator lights work…anyhow…I started hearing a clanking noise half way to work or so. I didn't notice anything funny with the bike so I continued on my merry way. When I got to work I gave the bike a once over and noticed the belt seemed to be about half way off the rear pully and that the inside ring…if that makes any sense…was just hanging out on my rim. The clanking noise I heard was that thing bouncing around.

Is this a common problem? Repairable? Not a big deal? I only live about 10 min away from work and figured I would just ride it home as it didn't seem to pose a safety risk on the way in…is this a bad idea?

I am not sure what the "inside ring" is but, if it is your wheel bearings then you should not ride it.

Do you mean the raised lip that was part of the pulley that keeps the belt on the teeth? There is a lip on the inside and outside of the pulleys on the tubers, unlike the XBs that only have 1 lip -

Yes Kilroy, its the raised lip part of the pully, the inside one. It came off and is just rolling around on the rim.

Mine came off a long time ago. I hack sawed it to get it out of the wheel. It was on a PM so it had to go. That was 20+ thousand miles ago. Still have the same rear sprocket minus the inside lip.

Are we talking about the stock rear pulley? Some of the aftermarket ones (like mine) seem to be all one piece, the lips and pulley one solid piece.

I'll try to post a pic when I get home. I believe it is the stock pully but am not 100% sure.

5liter, what does your belt look like on the pully without it? Mine seems to be hanging off by at least 1/4 inch, that can't be OK.

Probably going to take it to Harley and try to make them replace the pully. I have about 15-20 miles on it since I took it in to have the swingarm recall and get a new rear tire. I put 1000's on before that with no issues...although I suppose the part could have just failed.

I don't know the cause. I suspect it was on a tire change because the next day after a tire change I heard a tinkling from the rear. I stopped the bike and there was the inner lip on the hub of my PM. It had to come off or it would have torn up that rim.

The belt runs fine with out the inner lip. When I back it out of the garage the belt will move about a 1/4" off the pulley and then go right back when I take off forward. I've never had a problem with the belt tracking off the pulley.

It looks like the ring is just staked on the pulley. This is from a pulley I've got sitting around.

All rear belt drive sprockets with dual guide flanges are made in 2 pieces, there is no cheaper/easier way to hobb the teeth.

The OEM Buell sprockets are Aluminum and the inside flange is made of Steel and is "staked" on.

If your belt is running 1/4"+ off you most likely have a axle adjustment issue, possibly from the recent tire change.

5liter, thanks for those pictures. I have a few miles on tubers but I have never seen that before. I just notice, when I had a rear pully powder coated, the two pieces. I always thought it was one.

We had the front lip of the front pulley of my dad's FXD come off, by our own mishap. We set it on top of the pulley, heated it up, and it fell right back into place. Once it cooled, it was solid and ready to be reinstalled.
