Is there a better way to secure the seat on an M2. I may only get 3 or 4 rides out of it and it's rattling loose...again.

With the amount that the bikes vibrate, I would've thought the seat screw would be at least a bit more heavy duty.

Is there a quick fix?

Someone before me replaced the little fastener with a long bolt. Not so quick and easy but it doesn't come loose

If you go the safety wire route, Avery Tools is a great resource. I ordered a pound of .032 and a pound of .041 and two days later it was on my doorstep.

I suggest .032 for your application. The thick wire is a real bitch to work with.

You mean you don't check your oil every three or four rides? Sheesh.


The tab broke off mine a couple years ago, I almost blew a gasket in my mind but tried a coin after a bubble of clarity floated up through the rage... I found a nickel or quarter gives me more leverage than the tab did and I can snug it down pretty good. Maybe you should remove the tab and try my method, it'll cost you a nickel though.

Duct Tape on thumbscrew holds it in place but comes off easily to check oil.

Blue loctite on the threads every time I reinstall the seat. Hasn't come loose in 3 years. You don't want to overtighten that thing.

Littlebuggles - I only work a few miles (kms) from home so a "few rides" is a day and a half in real time!

I check my oil but my motor doesn't leak (touch wood!) so it isn't a daily problem for me.

Nickels are hard to come by in Australia but I'll keep my eyes open for one! (LOL)

It's not a big issue but I'm just slowly sorting out the few "little things" that are less than perfect.

Did you rejet when you put the k&n in? They are jetted a bit lean from the start, maybe that's part of your spluttering issues. My bike ran terrible when I put in the k&n filter until I rejetted it, putting the new pipe on helped out too, kinda have to do the whole thing for best results.

I cut a piece of bicycle inner tube and cut a small hole in the center. Stretched the hole over the head of the thumbscrew so that the sheet of rubber is now pinched between the thumbscrew and undertail when cranked down.

Doesn't come loose unless I loosen it, now.

That said, some days it was better than others!

Hi...The seat mounting bolt on my newly acquired 2002 M2L was acting as if the threads are stripped. Then looking at it more closely, the seat mounting bolt scheme appears to just have the single bolt poking into the seat being clamped between two steel spring clams up in the seat (and not going into a threaded nut) It sure seems like a whimpy solution and doesn't hold at all! Is this the standard Buell seat mounting scheme, or am I missing something? Are there any suggested fixes or modifications other than buying another seat. Other than this current issue, I sure love the bike. Oh yeah... tank paint blistering seems to be a future posting for me too.

That's the stock setup. Some folks have epoxied a stud into the bottom of the seat, and run it thru the tail section to nut it underneath when installed.

I use the stock setup on my S1W and on her M2L, no problems if its lined up correctly before you start tightening.

I've lost 2 screws...It's pretty scary when you enter a corner, and your seat slides off the side of the bike with you...Luckily I didn't lost the seat though.

My seat screw comes loose at times too. Kind of a hit or miss deal. What I don't like is the fact that you can put a $400 custom seat on the bike and any yahoo can come along and yank it off in 10 seconds. Any thoughts on security? The seat on the Blast is even worse. Flip the lever and the seat is gone. Going to try that inner tube idea.

I was thinking of trying to mount something like an S3 or X1 latch...don't know why the hell Buell skimped on the M2 in this regard...It pisses me off but hey, what can I do.

Find or have a stud mad that would screw into the existing seat hole, then have the latch system with a key switch that unlocks it...

actually for a while i my seat screw held my faring and seat on because those little rubber things that holds the faring on popped out of the frame so i replaced them with washers and nuts

Hey... thank you all for the good discussion and suggestions. I think I will try the approach that Ratbuell mentions of epoxying a stud into the bottom of the seat and running it through the tail section (and then securing the seat to the tail section with a wing-nut?). I'll report back in a few days on how it goes. Buells are awesome and so is this web site!

Hi again...

The all-thread stud epoxied into the M2L seat bottom with some JB Weld and a wing-nut worked great. I did take a Dremel tool to the grind off the threads of the rod where it contacts the mounting hole in the bike tail section when installed and tightened down. I also wrapped some tape on the section of the rod that I ground with the Dremel tool (which may or may not help), and I may coat the mounting hole in the metal tail section with a thin layer of JB Weld to prevent the remaining threads on the rod from still cutting into the metal hole when removing and installing the seat. So far I'm very happy with this solution.

I just took the knowledge from this thread and was going to epoxy(jb) a stud in and go with a wing nut underneath.

I got the stuff to do that, but while there I tried a couple of lags(wide threaded guys too) and I found that a 3/8 X 2 inch fit right in and tightened down like a good thing.

I put a flat washer and a lock washer and used the lag and it screwed right into that worn out clam shell piece of junk on the seat. Looks like it will hold forever, but I got the stud and wing nut just in case......I did take the grinder and blunted the lag before I used it.
