It's one of the three but the one question I'm in dire need of an answer for is; are the rocker arms on a '99 X1 the same as an '03 XB9? I swapped out the entire rocker box instead of just the tops because I assumed they were the same (upon close inspection they looked the same) and they had about half the mileage mine had but since the change I've had problems with two valves. First it was the rear intake, now it's the front exhaust. If they are different I'll paint my old ones and put 'em back on, if they are the same I'll try and find another culprit.

Anyone, anyone, Bueller, Bueller?

Nothing, from nobody?

This is weird, not even Buellistic to tell me what he's doing right or Brinnutz offering to buy the parts.

I have been doing some research and on Dennis Kirk they have some on there and both bikes are on the same fitment chart, soo....

Any ideas??

Maybe once everyone is at "work" tomorrow I'll get more response.

What else did you change? I would highly recommend after market parts up there in the valve train. My 01 x1 dropped both exhaust valves at different times. Once a 6k miles and also at 9500K mile. What were the conditions when the valves went. Did it happen when it was running or after a rebuild.

"SORRY", but "i" missed this one in answering ...

The ROCKER ARMS are the same for XL,BLAST, and XB's ...

EXHAUST VALVES: IMHO, there was a batch of BAD EXHAUST VALVES in 2000 and my BLAST had one ...

When do the valves let loose??? If they went in traffic I would say the valve guide clearances are too tight. If cruising, I would say oil flow problem. If screaming down the road, I would say poor quality valve. Hope this helps

Does anyone who the production dates/range when the "bad" valves were used? This makes me a little nervous. Mine is an early production 2000, November 1999 to be exact.
Thanks.

Kalali:

BMC or the Dealers are not going to tell you if there was a EXHAUST VALVE problem ...

"i" tried to find out if anyone on BWB'ers had tis problem, well "i" got no where as most BUELLers had already taken their engine apart for what ever reason ...

Let me say this, "i" am the 7th owner of the BLAST which is 1/2 of an XB9 engine ...

Of course "I" rode it like we all ride our BUELLs ...

"i" took it to a MACHINIST and he said the valve collar retainer clip GROVE was done wrong(ie: not properly) ...

"i" called HARLEY-DAVIDSON(BUELL SERVICE) and was told it could be fixed under what was called an "OVER WARRANTY CONSIDERATION" ...

The catch is that "i" would have to take it to a H-D/BUELL Dealer whom would take it apart and do the paper work and send it to HARLEY-DAVIDSON for a YEA or NAY ...

YEA: it got fixed ...

NAY: "i" was responsible for the Dealers
time and motion ...

"i" desid'ed to fix it myself rather than take the YEA/NAY chance ...

Mine is an early 2001 which had the bad valves that can be seen when holding the stems together, You can clearly see that they both broke at the lock in identical spots on the exact same valve...Exhaust. The first valve just broke at the lock and slipped down and was jammed into the guide and broke it! This was an easy $117 fix. The second time the rear went it destroyed the entire top end wich cost me 3k in parts, Not including custom mapping and tuning. The rear valve hopped through the intake into the front and destroyed it also!

Well, careful what you ask for huh?
O.K. For those just getting in the game I completely tore the motor down last winter for a bad crank pin, while I was in that far I put in a 1250 kit with new pistons and changed the rocker boxes to an XB9. Those are the major changes, most everything else was cosmetic. I don't know if the first one (rear intake) bent upon initial start-up or bent when the crank pin went and was seated when removed then stuck the first time I fired it up, it was bent way down the shaft almost to the valve itself. This next one stuck while breaking in, motor never revved over 4k, mostly stayed around 3K so that's leading me to suspect the oil pressure. I'm still running the original oil pump 'cause I didn't have the cash for a new upgraded one. I know Buellistic, I know... So that's the story morning glory, I'll get to work on it some this week because my parents have two of the three kids which frees up some of my time. I'll post up what I find out, I'm really not looking forward to fighting these push rod tubes again.

I have an extra set just wondering if I should swap 'em out. Looks like I may get a whopping 200 miles on the bike this year. I've said it once and I'll say it again; everyone needs two bikes.
