I’m headed back to work on the scooter (the Firebolt) from a trip home at lunch time. Bambi is out for a lunch time run and thank God with out his mother.

I’m clipping along a straight (of course it’s straight I live in Kansas) county road, when Bambi pops up out of the tall grass of the left hand ditch on to the road running at a good pace. It’s a real pretty fawn, white spots and all, and about the size of a Labrador Retriever and something that I would normally enjoy seeing in the middle of a noon time ride. Well, just so happens I use the word POP, because Bambi is really freaking close, and it is looking like we are in for a really BAD afternoon. I’m thinking this is going to get ugly!!!

Now from having thought this very situation through my head many times, but usually in my day dreams it’s a very large grain feed deer, a nice big doe, or heck even an eight or ten point buck, I kind of already knew what I would do, so I did it.

I got down tight on the airbox and did my very best impression of a 650lb bullet, since it was becoming very clear that Bambi and I had a date with fate. I know that I didn’t hit the brakes, but not sure if I laid into the throttle as I went into my bullet position as Bambi clearly didn’t look both ways before running out into the road. As Bambi and I come to this intersection of fate I was just milliseconds faster than him, and instead of me and the Firebolt T-boning Bambi, Bambi tried T-boning me and the Firebolt. It was all very much a blur in those last nano seconds. I felt the impact of Bambi’s head hitting my knee, kind of a glancing blow. Zoom it was done. I’m still upright, the bike didn’t even shack it’s head, and I’m looking in the mirror at my six and see Bambi heading into the right hand ditch. Of course the view is in the vibrating mirrors of the Buell, so I sit up and look back over my shoulder and Bambi is coming back out of the right hand ditch and is stumbling around like a really bad drunk.

Next I’m thanking my Guardian Angel for keeping up with me this afternoon, and God for taking care of me one more time. Again, Thank you Lord!!

Funny thing is that I was not rattled one bit. I road another 6 or 7 miles to work thinking I’m so darn lucky. I went in to the office and sat down at my desk and then it hit me. Weak knees…shakes..etc. That adrenalin is some good stuff when you need it! But coming down from it is another thing.
After going back out to the parking lot to check the scooter out, I found a couple of piece of deer hair in the front left turn signal and the left hand frame puck has a rub mark on it. So it looks like I was much closer than I actually felt. Bambi was at the front turn signal with at least the hair on his nose (I will be doing CSI work on it later to determine if deer snot is present) and then hit the frame with his head and that’s why I felt the glancing blow. I figure the frame had already taken the energy and his head was merely bumping my knee on the rebound from the frame impact. I will check the impact scene on the road out on the way home for deer pee and anything else Bambi may have dropped when out of Freaking nowhere, a motorcycle messed up his afternoon. I’m thinking he will at the very least be riding the short bus after getting whacked in the head like that. As for me, I sure hope this is my last deer intersection for at least a few 100,000 miles.

Man I’m lucky!!
