Buellistic has spoken the truth. Read it again and if your gonna make it a daily river, I with experience will say, no dont do it. The revs are fun but they also equate to more vibes and a slowwer overall bike. Its fun to play on the torque it develops but is a real pita when it comes time to take a longer ride even as little as 50 miles gets to be a pain. If your dead set on it, do it with a steel sprocket that can be resold if you find your not happy. I would never buy a used aluminum sprocket. Food for thought.

Well put Wile, and taken under advisement. I also own a really wonderful touring bike, a BMW R100RS that is my long distance ride, the Buell is for ripping around close to home.

Thats the spirit! Lots of different bikes for different missions. I like it. That said, try the steely out and let us know your thoughts. Screaming from point a to b is fun, dont get me wrong. Just want you to make a sound decision with all the facts first. Love the Beemers for touring too.

They are (BMW) some of the most reliable, comfortable and easy on gas there is. I used to own an R90 which I liked well enough but, it was also one of the most BORING bikes I've ever owned. Thats MY take on them. (not looking to debate the fact that they are a great bike) It pays to have a few different bikes so you can motor around on one then go to another for a different scenario. I now am down to six.

Still looking for a source for a motor sprocket. Any suggestions? You are right Wile about Beemers,but boring is OK for a tourer. Tthat is why I have to have another fun bike!

The Euro, Jap, NZ, Brit and Aussie X1s have higher gearing than the US bikes. Where the US bikes have a 27 tooth standard, the others run 29 teeth on the gearbox pulley. The rear pulley on the US bikes have 61 teeth and the others have 55. This basically gives about 20% higher gearing, ie. at 75mph my X1 is only pulling 3000rpm where yours pulls about 3500. It definitely suits me as I do a lot of open road work. Basically, my fourth gear is about where the US bikes fifth gear is.
If you change either of these sprockets, the speedo will be out. The factory uses the same speed sensor for all models, but changes the speedo itself to compensate. If you like relaxed high speed work, this gearing is excellent, bearing in mind that acceleration in top gear is compromised. Still quite adequate though. Top speed is just over 130mph but at only about 5200rpm.

Here are some options for you'll ...

Drag Specialties DS-360048(alloy) 30 tooth countershaft sprocket which makes like a "ECONO" 6 SPEED with your 5 SPEED TRANSMISSION ...


"OR" put on a XB12 MOTOR SPROCKET PN 40290-04 and PRIMARY CHAIN PN 40147004 ...

These are two examples of less RPM at TOP END(wide open) ...

"BUT". if your engine can not pull this higher gearing, as in not enough HP, you may wind up running faster in 3rd gear than 4th and 5th gear ...

You want to gear for last of your RPM/HP(engine still making HP) range which is IMHO 6800 RPM ...

I'm thinking the gears are too high for my riding. 3000RPM buys me 60 MPH indicated on top. I'd like to see that be nore like 3300/3500 RPM for 60 MPH. I don't see much over 80 miles per very often and I'd like to not slip the clutch as much getting rolling. I'm sure one of those Hoodoo six speeds would do it for me but I believe I can do it cheaper with sprockets.
