It is the coveted WP exposed spring shock. The one in the photo is the later edition if memory serves . . .as indicated by the stamped metal spring collars. I would guess it was taken from a 1997 or 1998 S1 or S3/S3T. I seem to recall the earlier WPs having billet spring collars.

They are indeed rebuild-able. I have had WP shocks reworked both by Aftershocks in Palo Alto, California and the local Racetech outlet - TFog Motorsports, in Golden Colorado. Parts seem to be readily available and the shocks can be set up for individual rider profiles.

YMMV . . .

Same as the OEM shock that came with my 1997 S3T ...

This shock is just fine for street use, "BUT" not for racing ...

They are re-buildable ...

Have 106,551.0 miles on mine and all "i" have done to it is put in a STRONGER spring(500 pound rating) so "i" can bring wife ...

"YES", "i" have the recall shock if it ever goes bad !!!

The S3 and M2 shock length(eyelet hole center to eyelet hole center) are the same the last "i" knew ...

It is a take off and put on ...

Firebolt -

Your most critical acquisition will be a pre-recall front shock mount. I believe that your '00 M2 came from the factory with a Showa enclosed spring rear shock. If so, this shock is shorter than the one in the photo. Your bike's front mount will have more of a curvature to accommodate the shorter Showa length.

I seem to recall a photo comparison of the two mounts somewhere in the archives. You may be able to find an early version mount either on eBay, in the BWB classifieds or through other sources. I seem to recall seeing one for sale recently, but can't recall where I saw it.

You will also need a T-bar hose clamp and a rubber fill piece that will facilitate attaching the dampening adjuster/reservoir to the mount. I you need a diagram I can copy off the pages from the parts manual for you.

Hope this helps . . .

Don

The part number for my 1997 S3T is SHOCK MOUNT PN 47725-94YA("BUELLschitte" part number K0407.8H) ...

Don,
Is the old WP shock longer than the INITIAL Showa recall shock (16" or so), or were they the same length? My 2000 X1 came with the Showa, but it was the first, longer version. I later got the shorter (14.5" or so), sturdier(?) version that required the new shock mount...

J:

You may be right. As near as I can recall, my several Showas were shorter and required came with the "kit" mount. I was not aware that there was a Showa offered that was the same length as the WP - this of course only reflects my anecdotal experience. Although I did at one point have one of the leakers on my S3T, it did not last long - being true to its nickname it puked and was replaced by the K1400 kit.

It would be much easier on anyone attempting to revert to the WP if the mount were the same. In my own lack of experience I have always had to resort to the shock length as the only reliable determination. If Firebolt's take off shock measures out at 16.5 inches, he won't need to replace the mount. If it is shorter, he needs to begin shopping.

ok so the first thing I will need to do if I get this shock is take my busted one off and measure it correct?

If it is 16.5" I will be able to just put the wp shock one correct?

If it is shorter I will have to find the older front mounting bracket correct?

sorry for all the questions but I found this one for alot cheaper than buying a works or penske and I am not a racer and I need some thing to replace this leaky hunk of metal I have on there now.

The earlier Shower and WP front mount should be the same. However, be careful with that particular model WP. There was a reason for the recall. I believe the alloy pressed eye on the front of that shock is pressed onto steel and the resulting interaction over time can cause the eye to slip off. Not every shock had this issue, but I think the particular one you have pictured does.

OLD design shock = long (16.5")
NEW design shock = short (14.something)

Measure your broken shock first. If it's 16.5 from eyelet to eyelet then you don't need anything.

"SHOCK MOUNT PN 47725-94YA("BUELLschitte" part number K0407.8H)"

Try istic's PN#'s instead. The PN I gave is from a '02 parts book and after doing some reading I realize all the recalls were done before 2002.

Check this site out to read up on the various shock recalls:

PK,

Great a photo! That is the definitive rear shock graphic.

My apologies for sending the topic down the wrong path with my flawed anecdote and less than thorough knowledge.

Pkforbes87:

TCO's can be a problem ...

The reason "i" kept my OEM shock is because "i" know how to use a magnet !!!

Different length shocks did cause a problems for technicians, "BUT" it was just more "BUELLschitte" for MECHANIC's ...

On top of that some of the replacement shocks were junk as the seals blew out very quickly ...

There was only one questionable "failure" of a WP shock under some very harsh treatment. I would not worry about using one on any Buell I owned. Still have mine on the S-1W ROC bike.

I do not own it yet but I am fixing to I was just trying to make sure I was making a good decision in buying it. I do not want the stupid showas, I think they are ugly for one and two I hate the fact that they are non rebuildable so to me they are pointless junk.

I have a Showa that was rebuilt by a shop for the former owner. It was resprung during the process to better carry my fat ass(220lbs). I think its a matter of finding a shop equipted to do the work or that is willing to knowing how prone they are to leakage. My first one was a pogo stick

If you are in Vegas I looked at that shock that is for sale. Seemed to be in ok shape but it needs to be cleaned up. He photographed the good side. He wouldn't budge on the $100 price for me so I let it go.
