Ive been drag racing the M2 here(1/8th mile) at four different events this year. I have been steadily improving but my 60 foot times still kinda suck. The best being 1.870 causing me to break out. My index was a 7.790 and I ran a 7.775. My mph for this run was 91.46. With the afforementioned info, can you more experienced racers give me an idea as to what my 1/4 mile times might be? There were alot of cars racing that were running 7.5 with 86 mph but with 1.6 sec. 60 foot times. If I can get my 60 foot times to around 1.6 seconds and with my higher mph, will I be making high 11's in the quarter or am I dreaming???

I've done some 7.70's with my S3 and went a 11.87 on a very hot day last June at the Harley drags in Bowling Green, Ky. Frank.

My front end is strapped and I launch at 3500 and shift at 6500. Hope that helps.

You should also take all the preload (lower) the back of the bike and, if possible, lower the front in the triple trees, but make sure you don't hit the front fender before the suspension is bottomed out.

1.60 60' times should get you into the 11's but 1.60's are very unlikely with a stock length swingarm.

Of course more HP and 1.80's 60' would do it too!

An airshifter should be good for tenth or two.

Still, if the stars align - perfect weather, perfect launch, perfect clutchless shifts - you might make it, but not on a regular basis...

Thanks guys.

Buellsrule: Thanks for the info. I gotta find a 1/4 mile track and see for sure.

Scott.... Yes, thanks to your advice earlier this year, I rigged up a strap and it helps big time. I went from 8.3 in the 8th to an 8 flat. Then I worked on your "clutch slipping" launch method and got down to a best of 7.775. It took four race days but Ive managed to lose/cut close to 6/10 of a second by practising launch technique. Friggin clutch is tuffassed ya?? ONe thing that has suffered is my reaction times. I could cut a nasty consistant light when I was dumping the clutch but with this slipping method, my reaction time is inconsistant. I was thinkin about mounting a small adjustable damper on the clutch lever somehow that would do the slipping for me. Does somebody make somthing like that???

Chase - I look forward to it and hope you get here in time to do some late season runs!

Percy, sorry I didn't recall our previous conversations (I do now and it sounds like you are on the right track!) - I put my nose into most drag racing threads and they all run together after awhile!

A 2 step clutch and wheelie bars is how it is usually done, but I don't recommend that.

Laps are what you really need! My reaction times are all over too because I haven't been to the track enough this year.
My brother, who is at the track every week, will crush you/us on the tree and 60' with his hand clutched, foot shifted Duc M900!
When making runs start a routine;
close visor
turn on 1st staging light
lay down on tank
reach around throttle so that when you have full throttle your forearm is parallel with the ground instead of elbow pointed at the ground (very important!).
bring revs up
turn on 2nd staging light
start letting the clutch out on the 3rd bulb

I have a background at the drags (in cars and bikes) but I never once felt compelled to take my M2 to the strip... until I went to an AHDRA meet. Most of the lo-buck and index class bikes running at those meets are Buells. It kind of got me interested again.

I guess I better get a tach... I never felt a need for one bombing the backroads, but I'd be lost without one in an index or bracket class.

Skip the tach and just get a shift light!
I have a nice led one that was less than $100

I have one of these wired into my tach.

Though I think it might be more consistent if I wired it to the coil, which is what you would do anyway if you don't have a tach.

Nice quality - good price

Not to be lazy, but their website tells you what you need to know!

http://www.raptorperformance.com/products/Shift_li ght.htm

It comes in very handy while street riding too - no reason to look down when going through the gears!
