I decided to make a baffled catch can for my M2. I found that the subframe crossbar under the seat conveniently had 2 holes already in it spaced 3.5" apart with access from the top under the seat. So I decided to build a can to fit there. The bottom left pic is some brass mesh screen that fits in the void in the middle of the can. The idea is to hopefully help de-mist any vapor coming thru. My idea is to let any escaping vapors turn-cool-expand before exiting out the outlet tube. I also installed a drain screw in the bottom which you can see in the under tail shot. It does have a sealed lid on the top also held in place by the mounting screws

Langperf,

Very nicely documented and very neatly conceptualized, constructed and installed. I do have a question about the filter in the 4th picture. Why is it there? I have seem other catch can configurations Badwebbers have made and the filter is a recurring item.

I understand the rocker boxes only pump vapour out of the engine. If this is true, why is the filter used?

I realize this is probably an elementary question, but I guess that is just what I am for now.

Originally I was going to mount the filter right there at the exit of the catch can under the seat and that is a pretty dirty area with the rear tire throwing up all kind of grit there. So this was to keep that contamination out. But I decided to route an exit hose down along the frame tube towards the bottom of the bike,(as seen in the picture) this is a much cleaner place for the exit to be, so at this time there is no filter at the end of that tube. I suppose when the motor cools after running there would be some reverse flow into the motor and a filter wouldnt hurt to keep any micro grit out and propagating its way back to the rocker boxes thru a series of hot cold cycles.(It will also keep insects from entering the vent hose and building a nest there blocking flow, as shown in anothers post recently)And of course a filter cant hurt(the old....an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure)

That's a great idea and pretty well executed... very slick. With XB rocker covers, the breather line would have a pretty efficient route to can. I'm going to remember this one.

I was perusing a Brit-mag just recenty and saw where the frame itself was used as a catch-can on a factory works bike.
