Suppose a ficticious situation where two identical riders of identical skills were riding a tuber and an XB with identical powerbands. On a nice tight, many curved course, which would be quicker???

Im gonna post this on the XB board as well....

Stock suspension at new condition?

I'm pretty sure I'd kick my a$$ on an XB, rode several at the first inside pass at Miller this year alternating with my M2 (X1 forks and remote shock) and I found the XB much easier to ride fast. Got my knee down on the demo bikes halfway through the day. Had to get my stock shock rebuilt with custom valving to get a knee down on my bike.

I w/ have to say the XB. The stock suspension is better. That being said, I wouldn't trade a tube for 2 XB's. I w/ buy a Ducati/Triumph/Augusta long before an XB. As far as I'm concerned, Buell ceased to exist as a manufacturer in 2003.

I doubt you will find anybody that seriously answers that a tuber handles better.
That said, I ride with a mixed bunch of Buells - tubers and XB's and if there has ever been a time when I am holding them up - it has nothing to do with being on a tuber and everything to do with the fact that I am on the street not Miller, NHIS or any other race track.
I guess what is reasonable on the street varies with the type of road you're on (surface, driveways/intersecting roads, wildlife, run off, width, etc.) and your age (balls to brain ratio (lol)).
Up here in NH (and at my B:B ratio) I would not be going any faster on any of my roads just because I'm on an XB (but I don't think I'm slow)....
The power bands are already pretty close - DucX1 likes to ride real close to me and I can tell we up and downshift at pretty much the same time.
FWIW I have yet to be shot down by an XB at the dragstrip!

Can't really say yet, as my XB-TT isn't here yet. Love my '01 X-1, and am adding to my "stable" with the TT.

I expect the TT to be more "efficient" on the street (if that makes sense), and the X-1 to have more "personality". Two really great, but different, ways of doing the same job.

In regards to your original question, I fully expect the XB would arrive first. As Scot says, though, at my B:B ratio, I don't think the margin of difference would be worth mentioning.

ride safe, have fun! Dave

The first thing I noticed when I demo'd an 03 XB was how much better the suspension was than my 00 M2. I never thought my M2 handled really well until I stopped using that horrible Showa shock that came with them. Getting a quality shock totally transformed the handling of the bike.

I'll say one thing a tuber does better than an XB, hands down; they crash better. Two lowsides and one highside accounted for broken levers, bent bars and scratched paint jobs, but no catastrophic frame damage.

I have both and can say without a doubt, the XB. The M2's rear suspension is just not enough. The Uly has more group clearance and turns in much quicker. That said the M2 is more stable and forgiving. The best way I can explain the M2, its a cross between a Sportser and an XB. The M2 handles better and has more power than the Sportster, but the M2 is a better Cruiser than the XB.

Tuber? HemiCuda Convertible. Brute force.

XB? Ferrari. Refined-fast.

Well...now that I've ridden the 1125, maybe not full-on Ferrari. Viper? Yah, that works.

After riding many XBs, I can say with certainty that if the riders were the same the XB would win hands down. It will turn inside of any tuber and is much more "flickable". The frame rigidity along with proper setup give good rider feedback. I won't trade my tuber for an XB but I am planning on buying a Uly this spring. Tubers were beautiful bikes. This is one area where the XB's can't match the tubers...LOOKS and attitude. Ride safe. Fast is for the track.

I've got both, and it's hard for me to say...
the S1W, will out run the city-x, but the city-x does dive into the corners harder.
But which one is quicker? he he
THE TUBER!

I just ride tubers because of my sasquatch proportions. I can ride a 12S...from the passenger seat. I love the Uly...but I have 2 tubers and an FLH, and can't sneak the Uly past the Budget Committee, LOL.

I figure the Tuber's are like Shelby Cobra's. Tube Frame Race chassis with American big block muscle.

The Xb's are more like newer Corvette's, refined, modern design's with Alloy, everywhere. ( I've only had test rides on Xb9 Firebolts, Compared to my M2, the XB wins the race )

If my legs were longer, or my balls bigger, I'd already have a Uly. I'm waiting to actually sit on a 1125R.

That was why the XB never really tripped my trigger. I kind of liked the Uly but the fuel range turned me off.

When I saw the 1125 I thought that I would give it a chance so I put my S3 up for sale. In the meantime I ran across an '06 VFR that a guy had bought and didn't like it. I picked it up and realized that I like the S3's ergos better than the VFR. Since I'm not a real agressive rider the tuber was fine for my style.

My S3 is still available but I think that it will still have to go (as much as I hate to) if I ever want to get an 1125 down the road. My guess is that the VFR will just be an interim bike until I can pick up a used 1125.

I currently ride a X1. Well I did ride it until I was sent to Iraq. I really like it. But it is time to pass it onto another soldier. I have moved onto a 1125R. Not sure if it is going to give me the same feelings as my X1 did. But it sure going to be a blast. I think the tubers have more soul, and the XB has more refinement. Ride what you love and listen to the unique music of each and love them for what they are.

My dad's M2 feels like a tractor next to my Xb9s.
His sounds a million times better though.
Looks more hard edge too.
It all comes down to personal taste.

I have many miles on a tuber and have rode XB's often. XB's are superior technically and I'm a big fan of the XB-S Lightnings, but will always prefer my tuber. It's simpler, harder edged, I prefer it ergonomically, and prefer its handling characteristics (suits my riding style better though I admit XB's are the more capable machine).

I have a '96 S1 and an '03 XB9R. Bought the XB in pieces with the intent on putting it together and selling it. After one ride, I knew I couldn't part with it.

I live off of a very twisty (but very short) road that I take the bikes out on at least once a week in the winter. I made the mistake one time of riding the XB first. I tried running the same lines on the S1 and just couldn't get a feel for it. I almost had myself talked into selling.

Depends on which tuber and which XB. If we're comparing S1 to Ulysses, I'll take the S1. If it's a Firebolt vs. an M2, I'll take the Firebolt.

Sorry I am so late to the debate. A good rider would be within seconds of a timed technical lap on either bike all things considered equal such as tires, suspension etc..... Based on experience!

The rider would be significantly more tired at the end of that lap, though, especially if he was on an M2. Cranking a tuber over in side-to-side transitions when going through an S curve is where you'll notice the biggest advantange of an XB. You'd be surprised at the effort it takes to do this on an M2.

Thats good info. Thanks. I've never rode an XB , only my M2 and thought it was rather quick from side to side. An XB must be very resposive in comparison. My previous ride was a 1974 Kaw Z1 so my experience is very limited. Im hoping to get a 1125 this summer as a stablemate for the M2. Mebey I dont need that much bike....NOT!}

As for fuel range between the M2 and Uly, both get about the same fuel mileage. So the M2's 5 gal tank has more range than the Uly's 4.4 gal. The problem is this, I can not ride the M2 out of gas before I have to get off the bike. Even with the Corbin seat, the M2 is not comfortable enough to ride non-stop more than 150-160 miles even though I have enough gas for 225-250 miles.

On the other side, I regularly can ride the Uly out of gas or 180-200 miles on average with several rides more than 200 miles with out stopping. Riding back from Indiana last year, I played in the Mountains for 205 miles non-stop then had to high tail it home to coastal NC from Virginia. Running super-slab I ran the first tank out at 189 miles (Marion VA to Durham NC). I stopped and fueled up, jumped right back on the bike and rode home another 130 miles. I covered the 319 miles in 4.5 hours averaging 70 mph including the fuel stop. No way I could have do that on the M2 and walked away from the bike.

Funny, I find my M2 to have quicker steering response than any xb I have ridden, 9R, 12R and a 12S.

Quicker turn in? Hard to explain, exactly, but I would say less steering effort, atleast. Not quite as solid feeling leaned over, however. And the M2 ...may... start lacking for traction at slightly less lean angle than an XB.

Keep in mind my M2 has full rearsets, and a well setup racetech frontend, and a racetech rebuilt rear reservoir shock. I have also lowered my triple trees on the fork about a millimeter and a half.

YMMV

Seems I have heard people claim an XB will lap faster than a tuber on the racetrack. Same rider same day etc. I can't verify this myself.

My M2 is sure quicker than my buddies XB12 with racepipe. I have cams and V+H muffler.

His bike does rev real nice, HP feels same as mine, but mine just has plain old GRUNT on his. We have never done a top speed comparo, but they are probably real close.

Personally, I just prefer my M2 over his 12S any day. I have only test rode a R, not enough miles to form a real opinion.

That said, I have sat on an 1125 for quite a while at motogp, and liked it enough to put down a deposit. They said I could take a short testride before I pay the rest and take ownership, so we'll see when it comes in, but I must admit I am sure looking forward to that day!
