I got a new set of EBC Carbon Kevlar brake pads in the mail yesterday to fix the slightly pulsing brakes on my M2.

I took out the old pads, cleaned everything including the pistons, and then compressed them into the caliper. I even cleaned off the liberal coating of paint off the front of one of the pads. (Nice quality control EBC) I lightly dressed the rotor with 200 grit wet or dry and then cleaned it off with brake cleaner.

When I tried to put the new pads in, there was no way they would go. I checked that the pistons were retracted all the way and tried again. NOPE! I tried removing the paint from the back of the pads. NOPE!

When I managed to scratch the powdercoating on the rim I yelled something like "******' PIECE OF ****!!!" and threw the pad across the garage. I managed to break a corner off the friction surface, and since temper tantrums are not covered under warranty, I just tossed them. (I know... adding insult to injury.)

I then went back to the bike, dressed the old pads with the sand paper, switched sides, and put a slight bevel on the leading edge (formerly trailing edge) of the old shoes. I put the whole thing back together and pumped up the system.

What a difference! The lever is way more firm. Even with the pads not fully bedded the brakes are way more powerful and easy to regulate. The pulsing is completely gone too.

I'm not sure what the deal was with the pads. Even though the problem is solved, it didn't need to cost me $35.00 to do it.

I seriously DOMINATED those pads though. They won't mess with me again! That's how I roll!

Seriously though...

I wish I hadn't freaked out at them. I am going to need pads next season and I want to know why those didn't fit. Have any of you had problems like that? There is no way they were going. My guess is they were at least 1/16 away from dropping in, and that was after cleaning up the backs. If I still had them I would put them on a sander, but why should I have to?

Did you take the cover off the master cylinder to ease the pressure in the system when you put in the new pads?

Sounds like the pads were just too thick, maybe you could get money back on them if that is the case, improper spec might be reasonable for shop damage, due to attempting fitment?

Stock front rotor?

The caliper can be a pain, did you bolt it back on before dropping in the pads?

Last week I installed new pads on my Cyclone. I've just dropped in Lyndall Golds before, but this set had to be block sanded to fit. I've never had that problem with Ferodo, but two pair isn't a proper sample. My guess is that EBC isn't the only manufacturer with QC issues - or they all expect the end user to perform final finishing.

"I yelled something like "******' PIECE OF ****!!!" and threw the pad across the garage. I managed to break a corner off the friction surface, and since temper tantrums are not covered under warranty, I just tossed them."

Years ago, I got some $19.99 NAPA motormounts for my Camaro instead of the factory mounts that cost $60 apiece from the dealer. I was minutes away from dropping the engine and trans back in and just had to bolt in the new mounts.

Of course, the $19.99 mount wouldn't fit, and I noticed it said, "Made in India" on it, but the box it came in said, "Made in the USA". I was so mad, I threw the mount down on the concrete as hard as I could. It bounced up and hit a friend of mine that was helping me on the knee-cap and he scurried/hobbled away as I did it again and again.

Every sharp corner on that mount was folded over, but I hammered them back flat in my vise, put it in the box and went back to NAPA to get my $38 back. I was hoping the counter guy didn't open the box with the mangled mount in it, but of course, he did. He was staring at me when I said,"Uh... the box says made in the USA, but the mounts say made in India, and um... it didn't fit anyway".

He said, "The box was made in the USA" and then he gave me a full refund.
