Looking at possible purchase of 1999 s3t w/ low miles and some mods. Any big problems with this year and any input on pricing.

The '99 really needs the Race ECM to run at optimum... and an upgraded muffler. Replace the front muffler hanger/voltage regulator relocator, the air can and the front rotor. These are most of the upgrades I did to my '99 S3 but I think the most important. No big problems that I'm aware of/that I've encountered. I've got 24K miles on my bike. Still runs and performs very well indeed.

Prices are in the $3-5K range (or higher), depending on where you live, condition of the bike, and upgrades performed.

Make sure you ride it. Fuel injection has been a problem with the 99 S3. But there have been a lot of people that haven't experienced it, I have. If it runs on both cylinders no sign of ping you should be OK. It should have the usual tuber upgrades, front exhaust mount, rear tank fastener, throttle cables, primary chain tensioner, nine button front rotor, upgrade shock, and more. Do a search.

Might want to ask about oil consumption. Mine used one quart every 100mi seemed to happen just after break in. Pistons and cylinders were out of round and had to be replaced at 5k.

Thanks for the info guys. It is a 1999 S3T with 6000 miles race ecm and muffler. Zero gravity windshield and corbin seat. Kept inside and looks to be in new condition.

Tunes nailed it. I would add that you be sure that you rout the breather tubes to a good free breathing catch can. This can save your right leg from getting covered with oil and also from blowing out the rocker box/push rod gaskets if you ride hard.
Get the shop manuel!!!
The bike is old enough that you should pull the primary case and look at the primary chain tensioner for wear and if need be upgrade to the new style.(oops, posted after your last, you can wait a while yet with that low of miles, good find!)
There are a number of other upgrades but Tunes hit on the only expensive ones.
Every one should note that changing out the front rotor to the 2000 spec. doubled in price a year back!
Chat with Al Lighton at American Sport Bike when you have a problem. He's forgotten more about tubers than I'll ever know and he won't pressure you to buy parts.
I hate working on vehicles but the S3 is very easy to work on and if I can work on this bike, anybody can.
The S3 is worth the time and trouble IMHO.

This is what I have found 1999 S3T 6000 miles in showroom condition with several updates. Corbin seat and backrest, race ecm and muffler. One owner and the owner is a dealership owner who needs to scale down his collection of bikes. Aprilia and Moto Guzzi dealer. Asking price of 6500. What do you guys think?

$5K tops... If it has the large hard saddlebags, then maybe $6K. If you can take pictures and post 'em, I'm sure we can make a better educated evaluation.

Tunes It does have the large saddlebags. I will try to post a picture of the bike. I was thinking of making a offer of around 6K.

I think its a bit steep for that bike in particular, no matter how clean. My opinion only! May be way off base as I dont know as much as the others around here about that bike. Try to meet him halfway between asking price and 5K. 5700 sounds right to me. Couple of bucks you can put back into it should it need tires and oil change. Primary shoe, if it needs it. Remember, its 8 years old. Not anything wrong with that but I look at it like this. Its not a new model and prone to all the bugs the year 99 had. Low retail is 3340 high retail is 4366 NADA blue book numbers

I have a 2000 S3 (not T) not too far from you in SC with all the requisite upgrades.

I'm asking a WHOLE lot less than $6500. With the Ventura rack and bag, it'll probably haul as much stuff as the S3T with hardbags would.

Medic24 - The '99 will need the front rotor and front muffler hanger/VR mnt upgrades, eventually. Not too expensive, just a p.i.t.a.

The bike looks well taken care of. The lg hard bags are hard to come by. I like my S3T and I would pay a little more to own one.

The choice between the blue S3T or the silver S3...

'99 vs '00
low miles vs high miles
upgrades
PM wheels vs cast wheels
color (important to me, anyway)
hard bags vs soft bags

My profile shows a pic of my S3, so ya know I'm hooked! Good luck & enjoy!

Medic24:

The asking price sounds pretty high. It is an 8 year old bike and he's asking quite a bit above book price. Some of the upgrades will be a little pricey for parts if you do the work yourself. Very pricey if you pay someone to do it for you. So you want to figure that into the total cost.

I bought a used '01 S3T in December 2005. I didn't want anything older because I went through the upgrade work on my '00 Cyclone (rear isolators, primary chain tensioner, muffler mount, shock, and shifter) and didn't want to go through all that again. At that time, there were a couple of dealers with brand new left over 2002's asking in the $8500 to $9000 range. I thought about buying one of them but they would have depreciated thousands of $'s just wheeling it out of the showroom.

I spent a few months casually looking until I found the '01. It happened to be from a Honda dealer and he was satisfied to sell it for $1000 below book rather then hold on to it until Spring.

For that kind of money have you considered a used XB or Ulysses?

Waaayy too much for that bike. I have a '99 S3T with the thin bags. I always thought the thin bags look nicer and fits what I use it for. That brings up, are you really looking for purple? Are you looking for tour bags? Will you baby it like the previous owner seems to have or undo all that babying by riding rain or shine?

Even with all that in mind, I "overpaid" $5500 and drove 4 hours away for mine 3 years ago because I definitely wanted black with PM wheels. It had 11K miles at the time.

If you want that color, you may as well begin dealing. If any color will do, take some time and look around. You may not get one as clean or with low miles, but you can certainly get a better value.
Kelley says it worth $5150, plus the ECM ($300 after setting the TPS) and the back rest ($275?).

It's purple. (I have a set of "purple" bodywork waiting to go on mine but I think those of us who want it are rare..) It's also fall. Start below $5K.

Good Luck, and come back soon to keep us up to date!

Thanks for all your help guys. The price and color just did not fit me. I think I would prefer a 2001 or 2002 S3T. I will keep you posted.
