I was ecstatic over being able to finish my Buell this week (got a modded swingarm, headwork, Zipper's oil pump, and a few other goodies with money from stuff I've sold), but it turns out my flywheels have shifted to the point of damaging my pistons. The crankshaft isn't good enough to rebuild as both the pinion and engine nuts have lost clamp load at one time or another. The engine shaft splines have been damaged slightly and on the pinion shaft side there was almost a total failure as the cam drive gear tried to tear that woodruff key out. Replacing a bad oil pump drive gear saved me there as otherwise it would've surely been toast. This time needing my pistons machined for exhaust valve clearance saved me, otherwise I would've never noticed that the piston pins were beginning to forcefully remove themselves from their rightful place.

Things were looking up as I was hoping for a bonus at work this week, but that wasn't nearly what I was hoping for and now I need to raise a substantial sum. My wife has been at home with our new little boy so we've had it rough this year.

My first several years of Buelling with the S1 were fairly care-free and I only had a few very minor issues to contend with. The last couple years I've been plagued with big issues and I guess this is where it ends.

On the upside, my legs and bicycle are putting on a lot of miles (though even the bicycle is requiring a lot of attention lately, too), and when I get the Buell back together I'll basically have a new motor. Until then...

Sorry to hear that Rick! I really appreciate the time you spent typing all that great advice for me. That completely sucks about your bike. Problems like that frustrate me to no end. Enjoy your family during your extra free time. Good luck getting the S1 up and running!

I would use this opportunity to use the lighter flywheels...

Eh, hell...

Bore the cases, and go for broke...

HAHAHA

Seriously, I dont know what you need, but, let us know, I have alot of parts kicking around right now, though, dont know that any of them will do you any good...

I will be converting to the 2000+ style, as well as adding a windage tray and crank scraper.

...but I'm already broke.

I have spoke with Rev. Perf. briefly on the matter. They agreed with me. The pinion side is ok, the engine side will never stay tight. I wouldn't want to continue having to check the engine sprocket nut every oil change on a freshly rebuilt crank.

Thanks for the kind words. I figure if anything I'll have the money by Christmas.

..but I'm already broke.

thing is...

You will already have the cases split...

SO, that would be the time to bore them...

The pistons and jugs cost the same, whether 1250, or 88/90 incher...

Actually, parts and machining combined it'll cost me roughly $300 more than parts I can source through the dealership to go big bore...that number would be even higher if I simply ball hone my cylinders as they are only 7500 miles old and are in good shape. Instead, I'm using the big fin cylinders this time around.

On top of that I'd want headwork to match and my heads have already been ported to a completely different application.

Anyway, I like the idea of cheap(er) rebuilds and getting most of my big parts through H-D.

It's a tempting proposition...but it'd set me back quite a bit more.

I hear ya.. I like to instigate though...

I stayed 1250 for a couple reasons...

Next, is some serious headwork, and, either serious dyno tuning.. .OR carb...

In a strange twist of fate, my mountainbike now has crank bearings going bad. What are the chances?

"...my mountainbike now has crank bearings going bad."

Remember: the crank nut on bicycles is reversed threaded, too.

You'll learn this the hard way or the easy way. Can you guess how I learned?

It's been years since I've had to replace a bottom bracket. Hardly anyone even uses square taper cranks anymore.

I can't keep anything on the road these days!

Good thing I haven't been driving the wife's car.
