What are you guys with '99 and newer S3's doing to keep your right leg from getting cooked? I just added a '99 S3 to my collection and on the ride home it literally cooked my right calf to the point I've got a burn there. It's got the race pipe, and it gets hotter than hell. Is there supposed to be a stock heatshield there? any pics, or ideas to protect my right leg? | ||

Every Buell I've owned had a heat shield of some sort on the rear pipe. I did find that when I removed the lower fairings from my S2, it cut waaay down on the heat as well. | ||

I've got an 02 S3T with the lower fairings removed and have no heat problem. | ||

BBQ sauce didn't really do the trick on the burn, although it did smell better. Yea, all my other Buells have some sort of heat shield on the rear pipe. 5liter, does your pipe have a heat shield on the rear header? Anyone have any pics of the stock setup? Or for that matter, any '99 and later exhaust with the heat shield? | ||

I wrapped my headers...while it is still hot, it is MUCH better now. | ||

I was looking thru the picture archives and don't see ANY '99 or later tubers with heat shields. It would seem that once they started routing the pipe under the frame they no longer used a shield. I guess I'll have to improvise. Or stick to the S2's, and soft luggage,for my long distance riding... | ||

Art Congrat's on the S3T. I have a 99 S3 and it has a heat shield on the rear pipe. I don't get the heat you are talking about. My 96 S1 will heat things up if you run below 35mph for long. Is the motor running OK? Joe | ||

Bart, What is the finish on the header pipe? Flat black radiates a lot more heat than the bare finish. A polished metal finish will radiate the least amount of heat. The silver finish Jet Hot type coating helps reduce not only the radiant heat but also the convection heating as does header wrap. Looser riding pants help too. | ||

Bart, if you remember my 99S3 at Springfast didn't have a heat shield either. I think Al at American Sport Bike sells some tho... Congrats on the S3, I still love riding "my" S3... When I can get the GF off it anyway!  (Message edited by unibear12r on July 05, 2007) | ||

The later tubers don't have a shield on the rear header. Getting the pipes coated by Jet Hot is probably the best solution. Believe it or not, I found that the heat radiated from the rear pipe on my 2000 S3 was significantly reduced after I polished my headers. Give it a try; the bike will look better and it may work for you too. | ||

The heat shield everyone is talking about isn't on the pipe, it's the plastic part that bolts to the frame rails on the right side.  If this shield is removed (a popular mod it seems) heat becomes almost unbearable. I noticed a decrease in heat when I polished my pipes,too. The heat isn't bad at all with polished pipes and the stock heat shield in place. | ||

Dan, I don't think that the heat shield was part of the S3 package. I've only seen a couple on the limited number of Buells I've seen, so I figured that they were a limited aftermarket item. My '99 runs hot. It's seems better with synthetic oil. Polishing the pipe is next! | ||

Thanks for the info guys! Yea, the pipe appears to have been painted with generic flat black heat paint. Which is starting to wear off. I'll have to take the pipes off and polish them. The bike has also developed a new problem... I took it to the wash rack, because it had alot of spooge below the timing cover and on the reservoir for the rear shock. After washing the bike and really concentrating on that area, It won't start, and when it does start, it runs like the timing is off, LOL. I'm going to have to go thru this bike a lot closer than I had anticipated to get it road worthy. I'm still not disappointed though, it's a nice addition to my collection. I expected it to be in better condition though, since it belonged to the wife of a service manager at a local Buell Stealership. All things considered, I'm still pleased with the purchase.  Another tuber saved from the chopper crowd! | ||
