I'm in the process of installing the upgraded front exhaust mount on my 99 M2. While installing the new bracket, I noticed a problem.

There is a stud that comes out of the bottom left corner of the crank case that acts as one of the exhaust bracket mounts. There's a lock-nut that threads onto it to secure the bracket.

When the nut starts to get tight on the bolt/stud, the stud spins with the nut - it has come loose from inside.

What do I do to get this to tighten? The Buell manual is no help.

I hate to ask, not being near my bike to look at it...but it doesn't go thru to the other side of the case and out, to a bolt head, does it? On my S1W (old style hangar) both of the bolts that hold the hangar to the case go through to the other side...but there may be a third one involved with the updated mount that my bike doesn't use for the old mount.

Schwiing,

Check the other side of the case. That bolt goes all the way through. Don't forget to scrape the paint off the mount where it meets the case and voltage regulator bracket to make sure you get a good ground.

I updated the bracket on my 2000 M2 some time ago, and all the mounting points are through bolts like Ratbuell mentioned. Take a real close look, the bolt ends are not real obvious at first glance. The top bolt comes through just to the left of your oil pressure switch. And the bottom bolt, besides going through the engine case, goes through the rear shock mount. The nut is hidden behind the upper hydraulic hose. Be aware that when you take out the bolt for the shock mount things will shift on you if you don't support it in some way.

On mine, the top bolt is the one that goes thru to the other side and holds the shock mount. Got some good advice about unloading the shock load and bracing the rear wheel - no problems there.

Didn't think that the other bolt went through the case - I'll take a look when I get home.

It'd be a great relief if that's the case. Had nightmares last night of having to take the bike in and have the case split to reset a stud.

Both bolts go all the way through, I'm certain, but they put the heads on opposite sides of the bike.

BE SURE that you have the motor and the frame supported before you pull either of those bolts out! If you don't, the weight of the bike will pull the shock mount out of position and you'll have a real wrestling match on your hands.

Never mind how I know this...

Sorry for some flawed info. in the last post. Correction, both bolts go through the case and the shock mount.
