The Buell Race ECMs for tubers have been hard to find for a few months now, they were on backorder. And now I know why.

They used to be different than the XB ECMs. Physically, they were larger, as were all tuber ECMs. I suspect that they used a different microprocessor as well, since they were developed years before the XBs came out.

The new batch of tuber race ECMs came in, and they are now the same physical package as the XB ECM. The connectors were always the same, as were the mounting hole size and locations. But it is clear that they must be pushing the tuber algorithms into the XB ECM now, because it even has the center terminal that drives the servo on the XBs. Probably has a faster processor in it, I'd imagine. Wouldn't be surprised if the old ones used through hole technology and the new ones are surface mount, but that is just a guess since they are potted and you can't see the circuit card.

We have a couple in stock now if anyone needs one. We'd been on backorder for months.

Al

I wonder if the VDST will still work with them, or if there will have to be an update for the software?

Howdy Al,
I am interested in one for my 2001 S3 in the near future.
Will it use the same mounting points on the bike, and the same connectors? Is is "Plug and Play"?
Also, will my VDST work to reset the TPS?
I won't actually be able to use it until I can afford a D&D exhaust system, so I would be buying it on faith that no special work is involved.
Thank you for all your help.
Patrice.

Nick:
That will be a yes as you can use it with the XB ecm, the comms operation won't change because of the involved costs related to "new tools" of the factory and dealers.

As I have it from a "reliable source" the original Race ecms were built from parts that existed until the stocks were exhausted. [ Al played a big part in bringing them back as well. ]

I would "guess" that the new ECM will be at least as good as the old one and likely be better,

I just purchased an older GEN Race ecm and its like having a new bike just better all away around.

Duck the OLD race ecm is designed to work with inlet and outlet changes,
( mild ones ) I have a force winder and K&N on the inlet and a super trap later version on the outgoing side
its good low end is much better and the engine is just better all over.

As Al indicates the new ECM is based on the new tech used in the XB footprint, and the back order was a result of the need to verify the new ECM working as it should.

"As Al indicates the new ECM is based on the new tech used in the XB footprint, and the back order was a result of the need to verify the new ECM working as it should."

That would certainly be my guess. There are differences between the old and new ECMs, there are a few pins on the new ones that aren't used on the old ones (i.e., fan, Vehicle speed sensor, servo) but the other sensor inputs and such are all on the same pins. But HW compatibility doesn't always equal SW compatibility. Kudos to Buell for doing whatever it took to make it work rather than just turning them off (again).

I haven't tested it yet, but there is absolutely no reason to believe that VDSTS won't work just fine with it.

Does this new ecm perform differently or better than the old race ecm?

I'd bet that it is exactly the same.

But that IS just a guess.
