Hi all. First off, I'd like to say that I've been a lurker here for a while, and the information went a long way in helping me to decide on buying an M2. Thanks  Now, on to my question... The event: Today on my ride home, I passed a local cop. I wasn't speeding, wasn't revving or anything, just cruising along down my street approaching my driveway (probably decelerating from about 40 in second or third). By the time I got into my garage (about a block later) and was dismounting, I looked back and there was the cop, rocketing up the hill, in the direction I would have been going, had I not turned. My neck of the woods is pretty quiet overall, so I can only imagine he was in a hurry to find me for probably a noise violation or something. It could have been a coincidence, though. The back-story: My 2002 M2 has a Force Motors 1-piece Streetfighter pipe on it, with the 'street baffle.' And it's LOUD. I'm all for loud pipes saving lives, but this thing sets off car alarms and sends children screaming As far as I know, the law in NY is: Have baffle, will ride. So I shouldn't be catching flac for noise, right? Does anyone know if there is anything for bikes, like they have for cars (80+ dB = ticket)? The low down: So my question is.. Does anyone know of a decent way to quiet down an exhaust without spending a fortune. I really like the way this one sounds, plus after just buying the bike, I don't exactly have the cash to go out and get a new set of pipes. I was thinking of maybe pulling out the baffle, and modifying it so I could pack some fiberglass in there, maybe change the outlet a bit, too, to make it more like a supertrapp setup, where I can adjust the volume with baffles. Any suggestions? Are there other baffles that will fit in my current can that might quiet it down a bit more? Thanks Tom | ||

i run the force race pipe, with no baffle and have no issues......... just a matter of what kinda day the cop is having... most cops wont mess with a bike for loud pipes unless your in a big situation such as daytona or something......... this is just my experience..... think about all the harley guys running around with str8 pipes........ | ||

If you want to be quite in the neighborhood her is what I do. Run a higher gear than you normally would for that speed. IE If I am doin 40 and I am in 3rd and I know the cops in the area do not like noise, I kick it up to 4th and it cuts down the rpm's and noise. | ||

I used to run the same pipe, but didn't like the noise so I tried many different avenues to quite it down. First I tried packing some fiberglass around the baffle-was more quiet, but didn't last long, due to there is nothing in front of the baffle to keep the exhaust "wind" from blowing through the packing and thus blowing it out of the pipe. I then welded in a small peice having the same inside diam as the OD of the baffle-to keep the "wind" from blowing the packing out. This worked but still wasn't as quiet as I wanted and made the carb hard to tune. The final straw was cutting off the megaphone-I bought the pipe for 150 bucks, and making up a connection to hook my Wileyco too, which sounds great and I like very much. So unless your willing to cut into your pipe, I would avoid trying to pack anything into it because I don't really think it works very well. Some people have had luck using cores from other pipes or even volkswagen hop up mags with good results but I'm unsure how long they lasted or how hard the bike became to get into tune. Good luck, and those forces do sound sweet at any RPM, but I couldn't stand it after about an hour, plus I couldn't sneak out of the house after putting the kids to bed. | ||

Tom (Silenc3R),you might want to try Car Chemistry muffler inserts, "www.carchemistry.com" sold at Jegs or Summit racing. I run a straight through 2 1/2" fiberglass muffler that was real loud and went with these inserts. They really work well to quiet things, still have a nice sound and as the company states increase midrange somewhat without sacrificing top end much which was perfect for my stock M2. I had already rejetted for performance and the jetting did not need a change with the inserts. They are somewhat adjustable for backpressure. Bob | ||

Thanks for the advice guys. I don't think my bike is as loud as my friend's 1977 Harley (a set of shotgun pipes with a single baffle in each). ...And the cops in my area have let him get away with it for almost 20 years... But they also seem to give Sport bike riders a harder time than Cruisers. With luck, they won't give me too hard a time. I figure, winter around here is pretty long, and I'm usually one of the first people to take a sawsall to a perfectly good vehicle... So, what's one more?  I think what I might try to do this winter is find a stock set of pipes on the cheap (ebay or some place), and put a different can on them. Making up a set of hangars shouldn't be a problem. And this way, I'll have a set of pipes for track days and big events, and a set for normal every day getting to and from work. Again, thanks for the advice. please feel free to keep it coming. "..1977 Harley (a set of shotgun pipes with a single baffle in each..." I bought a '97 FXD in July that had a nearly new SE II 16 Gage Shotgun system. It was not modified in any way, it arrived in the world that loud (and not legal for street use). I test rode it with ear plugs in and helmet on and figured I could live with it. But I couldn't. I found some Custom Chrome baffles that fit right in the outlets with a minor mod and it probably dropped the noise level by half. You can't tell they are there unless you look for them. Now I like it. It is a little out of character for me to own a loud motorcycle but the kids are being pretty good about it... :> Any one finds a stock exhaust system (pipes and mufflers) for a '97 Dyna laying around I'm interested though. And I figure there is somebody out that that still wants to learn it the hard way so I'll get the money back for the system I have. Jack | ||
